Mr. Ortiz is in his 10th year teaching in Weslaco and in his 20th year as a band director. Bands under his direction have earned Sweepstakes Awards at the UIL Concert & Sight Reading Evaluation, and superior ratings at various South Texas Music Festivals. Aside from serving as the Head Band Director and conductor of the Varsity 8th Grade Band at B. Garza Middle School, Mr. Ortiz specializes in brass instruments and teaches Trumpets at Weslaco High School. He also has vast experience teaching woodwind instruments.
Before his time in Weslaco ISD, he served as an assistant band director in San Benito ISD, where his bands also received Sweepstakes Awards. Mr. Ortiz has extensive experience with electronics and sound engineering. He is currently the electronics designer for the Mighty Weslaco Panther Corps at Weslaco High School.
Mr. Ortiz graduated from Texas State University (Southwest Texas State) with a Bachelors in Music Education in the Fall of 2000, and has since remained a successful music educator.
Mr. Ortiz resides in San Benito with his wife Jasmin, and youngest son. His oldest son, a former member of the Weslaco Panther Corps, is currently attending Texas State University pursing a degree in Health Administration and Physical Therapy.
