Welcome to WISD " The Home of the Mighty Eagles!"
III. HEAD LICE
If a child is sent home due to lice and/or live nits, the parent or emergency contact will be notified immediately and the child should be picked up from school within ONE HOUR. In cases where the parents or emergency contact cannot be reached to pick up the child, a staff member or the school nurse will continue to try to contact parents or emergency contact person(s) and during this time, the child may be relocated to the back of the class or to another classroom until they are picked up from school.
Head checks will be conducted as necessary. Only one day of excused absence will be allowed for the treatment of lice. If the child is kept out for more than one day, the additional absences will be counted as unexcused. It is recommended that the child be taken home to be treated immediately and then brought back to school. If your child is sent home with head lice, they will be given the opportunity to make up any missed school work during before-school tutoring (when available), after-school tutoring (when available), or Saturday school (if available).
When the child returns to school either the same day or the following morning, the child must come by the nurse’s office or principal’s office (if nurse is not present) to be checked prior to returning to the classroom. Parents should accompany their child in case they still have lice or live nits and are sent home again. It is the parent’s responsibility to update all numbers with the campus office and nurse’s office any time there is a change.
If a child is sent home more than 3 times, a letter will be sent out to the parent to sign and return to nurse’s office. This letter will contain the dates the child has been sent home for lice. The campus principal will be notified that the child has been sent home for lice or live nits (lice eggs). Parents will need to talk with the school nurse, obtain educational literature and view film on the lice life cycle. Training in the lice life cycle and how to prevent and treat lice will be given at that time.
Further information on lice can be viewed over the school website under the Department: Health or the nurse can provide a paper copy upon request.
