Welcome to the talk series of the Wisconsin Historical Analysis Table workshop, affectionately known as the WHAT! We are thrilled to have you join us for this exciting journey into the realms of comparative-historical research.

Who are we? This student-oriented workshop is made possible through the generous support of our faculty sponsors, Ivan Ermakoff and Chad Alan Goldberg. Together, we aim to create a dynamic platform that transcends disciplinary boundaries, inviting speakers from both within and outside the university. Throughout the upcoming sessions, you can look forward to engaging seminars, collaborative reading groups, casual happy hours, and small conferences.

What inspired the choice of "WHAT" as the name for our workshop? Taking cues from the Comparative Historical Analysis and Theory (CHAT) group, we creatively conceived the Wisconsin Historical Analysis Table (WHAT). Then how should it be pronounced? "What?" We pose inquiries encompassing not only "what" but also delving into the realms of "why" and "how."

How did the inception of this workshop unfold? In the fall of 2023, we initiated the process by reaching out to Chad via email, envisioning a cohesive group that would bring together our student comparativists within the department for meaningful connections and collaboration. Following that, we reached out to several scholars, who graciously expressed their willingness to contribute to Ph.D. training and shape the future of academia by giving talks and connecting with our students.

Collaborations? We have co-sponsored talks with both department- and university-level colloquiums/workshops/seminars. For example, we have worked with the Havens Wright Center for Social Justice, the Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies, the Economic Sociology and Comparative Political Economy Workshop, the Sociology of Economic Change and Development Training Seminar (SECD), the Community and Environmental Sociology Colloquium (C&E Soc Table Talk), the Wisconsin Collective for Ethnographic Research (WISCER) - Qual Methods Workshop, and the Demography Seminar (DemSem) at the Center for Demography and Ecology (CDE) and the Center for Demography of Health and Aging (CDHA).
