Welcome to our summer program page
Welcome to the Volcanoes and Ice Summer Program homepage.
The main goal of this program is to familiarize students from traditional 2-year institutions in the United States and Chile with volcano and glacier deposits and processes, and the use of drone technology for geologic applications.
We will use the geologic settings in the Oregon Cascades for the 2024 VISP to contextualize the following objectives:
to provide a field- and lab-based experience for the students that will be focused on volcanoes in glaciated regions,
to train students in using drone technology for geologic data collection,
to train students in structure-from-motion software to construct digital elevation models,
to develop student skills in open source mapping (QGIS) and statistical packages (R-Studio) for visualizing and analyzing their data, and
to establish mentoring relationships between PIs, students, and program participants to facilitate professional development for students seeking to further their education and professional skills.
If you are interested in learning more about the school, please contact Shaun Marcott (smarcott@wisc.edu) who is directing the VISP program over the next four years. Support for VISP is made possibly by the National Science Foundation.
