STORM
Student Training in Oceanography Remote Sensing and Meteorology
THE STORM REU APPLICATION FOR SUMMER 2024 IS NOW CLOSED!
Welcome!
The STORM REU provides undergraduate students the opportunity to gain research experience in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Although spearheaded by AOS, the program consists of mentors across multiple additional institutes and centers within the Atmospheric Oceanic and Space Sciences (AOSS) building including the Center for Climatic Research (CCR), the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS).
What we're about:
STORM has three main objectives:
Exposure: provide undergraduate students with a first (or near-first) experience in STEM research, specifically in the atmospheric and oceanic sciences
Enrichment: promote development of a set of research, self-reflection, and interpersonal skills that will serve undergraduate students in a variety of STEM career paths
Empowerment: instill a sense of self-awareness, ownership, and agency in each undergraduate student so that they can more readily navigate STEM careers as they are (not as they think they're expected to be)
Selected students will spend 10 weeks (June-August) in Madison conducting research under the guidance of a faculty mentor in a variety of areas such as meteorology, remote sensing, oceanography, and climate change. In addition to research experience, several professional and academic development opportunities will also be provided during the program. Please use the links below to learn more about the program, explore potential projects, and apply!
Who should apply?
Undergraduate students at least 18 years of age who are currently enrolled in an accredited 2- or 4-year college or university and will have at least one semester left of their undergraduate program by the time the REU starts are eligible to apply for STORM.
Community college students, tribal college students, and students from historically excluded groups are especially encouraged to apply!
