Youth voice and multiple types of leadership are essential to our work and can be done in SO MANY WAYS depending on each person's interests, talents and skills they want to learn more about. We are looking to work with youth, who have a variety of skills and interests:
Communications and Media- Do you enjoy promoting or motivating people on social media, by writing articles or trying to decide what matters most to different groups of people. . .
Education and Outreach- Are you good at gathering information on a topic for people and connecting with groups to share that knowledge. . .
Research and Evaluation- Do you like to problem solve, create a question and then explore to figure out an answer that makes sense and can help someone. . .
Governance and Policy Making- Are you excited about finding ways to apply knowledge in the community as a whole by forming new ways of living together through policies or new norms. . .
Service and Philanthropy- Is your passion finding ways to find who needs help and giving them what they need. . .
Activism and Advocacy- Would your friends describe you as someone who learns about important issues and not only uses their voice to make a difference but motivates others to do the same. . .
Our "Current Conversations" are a space to discuss what we observe in our communities, ask questions, share resources. Each conversation combines recent needs youth have expressed and a racial equity or social justice lens. Participants will have a chance to listen and learn from others around the state. No one viewpoint will be valued over another. Everyone's voice will be heard. There will be time at the end of the session for youth to speak about their own experiences as leaders in their community and the types of skills they are working on to influence positive change.
If you have ever considered the following questions, a Current Conversation could be the space for you!
What would a successful, challenging conversation look like in YOUR community?
Have you had hard conversations this past year? Did you avoid conversations? With whom? Why?
Where could you have a challenging conversation?
What resources do you need to make it successful?
For more information about what to expect visit the "What to Expect" Tab.
For more information about the topics in our upcoming conversations, check out the "Upcoming Conversation" Tab.
Our team meets on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30-5:30 via zoom. The team is composed of Division of Extension staff, and youth and adults from around the state. We shared a range of options above. Here are some current options for participation in our team:
Anyone is welcome to attend our biweekly team meetings--contact Erin Conway erin.conway at wisc.edu for connection information
We would be happy to collaborate with any team to provide a current conversation experience or training in creating a Brave/Safe Space
We are always editing our Google Site to share resources like the ones we used during the retreat session. If you’re into writing content or visual design, we’d love your help.
We would love more youth leaders, especially facilitators, involved in these sessions. We invite you to become a facilitator.
Information sharing is an area of focus. We continue to generate ideas for posts, write messages, share resources and design images. You don’t have to attend any meetings to participate in this opportunity. If social media is your thing, this might be the place for you.
