Catherine Wang
PhD Candidate
PhD Candidate
Welcome! I am a Ph.D. candidate in Operations Management at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, fortunate to be advised by Professors Bob Batt and Hessam Bavafa.
My research focuses on healthcare operations, with an emphasis on long-term and post-acute care systems that serve aging populations worldwide. I am particularly interested in how staffing, training, and regulation affect quality and performance in delivery settings such as nursing homes and home healthcare. I use administrative and survey data to evaluate these systems and generate insights that inform policy and operational decision-making aimed at improving service quality.
I completed B.S. degrees in Theoretical Mathematics and Economics at The Ohio State University, pursued Ph.D. studies in Economics at the Kellogg School of Management, and earned an M.Eng. in Operations Research from Cornell Tech. Before starting my Ph.D. at UW–Madison, I worked as a predoctoral research assistant at the Wharton School.
I am on the 2025-2026 job market!

Student Comments from Teaching Evaluations
"Catherine was an incredible TA. She was organized, efficient, and very kind. She sent announcements covering what we were going to cover in discussion that week which was great, when we got to discussion - we got straight to work! Catherine is very efficient and works well breaking down concepts even with a limiting 50 minute timeline. She answered every students questions and made sure everyone was successful with the process for our excel cases. She stayed after class to help students with questions and was very kind when explaining concepts. Overall, Catherine did a fantastic job!"
"CATHERINE WAS THE GOOOATTT!!! She was on top of emails and was super supportive in our learning. She was super helpful in clearing up confusion on topics from lecture and was super helpful in figuring out any excel trouble. She deserves everything good in life. We love Catherine."
"Catherine was an amazing TA. She always walked us through question very thourghly, was able to read the room if we didn't understand, often answered questions and re-did probelms if we needed help. She would answer questions for us during her break and was super easily accessable through her email. Overall, such a dedicated TA and would highly recommend her!!"
"Catherine was among one of my favorite TAs here at UW-Madison, and she was always incredibly helpful. She was very kind and understanding, but she also had lots of patience. I hope she continues fostering a friendly and collaborative environment."
"I really liked your energy and you always taught the discussions very well. Thank you!"
"I never expected to find statistics and Excel work engaging, but your way of explaining complex concepts made them much more approachable and even enjoyable."
"She did well by giving feedback on cases and answering questions thoroughly in discussions. There is not much for her to improve, as she is very effective at teaching the content and ensuring everyone understands."
"Catherine was such a caring TA who would always ask everyone in the class if they needed her to review any concepts. She was very considerate and is one of the best TAs I've ever had. I also really like how she went through the excel parts of the case at a slow pace so that everyone could follow along. She was also very helpful during office hours."
"Very smart and concise"
"Catherine was very kind to everyone in class and was very helpful with the practice problems and homework. The course itself was challenging, but she helped us in beneficial ways."
"She was just a great teacher. She was smart and knew the answers to questions. She was a great resource."
