Winton Woods City Schools is committed to ensuring that all students achieve their highest potential. As a New Tech Network district focused on project-based learning, our students learn through appropriate, challenging, authentic projects as they explore, adapt and engage the world around them. This unique approach to learning creates a seamless pathway toward success from preschool through 12th grade. This rich academic experience gives our students increased opportunities to be positive contributors, creative innovators and strong leaders in our community and in our world.
With our taxpayers’ approval in November 2016, Winton Woods City Schools is currently building new district facilities. This will include two new campuses—a K-6th grade elementary campus on the current site of Winton Woods Middle School in Greenhills, and a 7th–12th grade secondary campus on the current Winton Woods High School site in Forest Park. Both the elementary and secondary campuses will have shared community spaces. We will also be expanding our preschool opportunities by renovating the current intermediate building, strategically named the Winton Woods Preschool Village.
Winton Woods City Schools serves students and their families in the communities of Forest Park, Village of Greenhills and Springfield Township. We are an open enrollment district. We celebrate cultural diversity, with a student population from around the world and 31 languages spoken in the district. Our academic focus begins in early childhood with a preschool program that offers a blend of general and special education. In 2016, the program received a five-star rating—the highest—from the State of Ohio’s Step Up to Quality rating system. Beginning in 2016-2017 school year, the district began offering an all-day preschool option to our families. All-day kindergarten began in the district in 2012. Since its inception, over 98% of Winton Woods' kindergarten students were promoted to first grade. Education in the district’s primary and elementary buildings focuses on differentiated instruction, data-driven lessons, Ohio Learning Standards and classroom technology. Over 96% of third grade students met the requirements of Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Winton Woods Intermediate School (grades 5-6) offers strong academics and a variety of fine arts options—band, orchestra, choir and visual arts, with a host of extra-curricular activities and clubs.
Winton Woods Middle School (grades 7-8) offers math and foreign language classes for high school credit as well as advanced classes in science and language arts. We also offer elective engineering courses that introduce students to technology and robotics. Winton Woods High School is fully accredited by AdvancEd and is a full member of the Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB) High Schools That Work (HSTW) school improvement network. Every student on the main campus who is enrolled in College Prep, College Credit Plus, Honors or Advanced Placement courses belongs to either the Academy of Global Studies (AGS) or the New Tech Academy (NTA).
The district offers 22 competitive varsity sports, as well as various clubs. Many of these opportunities begin in our primary schools. In the 2016-17 school year, the district added girls' crew (rowing) and boys' lacrosse to its high school sports. Numerous sports teams have earned regional and state recognition. Chorus, band, and orchestra are offered beginning in fifth grade, and all students in grades 1-6 participate in visual or performing arts courses. The district is recognized throughout the region for its outstanding music offerings and has earned regional, state, and international honors for its choir, band, orchestra, and art programs. As a result of our dedication to a comprehensive music program, the National Association of Music Merchant designated Winton Woods City Schools as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in the country.
The district’s current five-year financial forecast shows that a combination of past expenditure reductions and modest increases from the State of Ohio will ensure the dollars generated from the district’s 2009 10-year emergency levy will last until 2019. In November 2018, voters passed a Substitute Levy to help the district sustain the current high level of educational services and opportunities for all students. Additionally, the district’s fiscal year 2016 financial report from the office of the Auditor of State revealed no internal weaknesses or noncompliance issues. Winton Woods City Schools has also received the “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting” from the Government Finance Officers Association and the Association of School Business Officials International every year since 1994. We anticipate that we will continue to receive this distinction in the upcoming years.
Winton Woods Board of Education has decided to place an operating levy on the ballot in March of 2020. This levy will support the expansion of the Preschool Village, enhancement of school safety measures, and the steady increase in enrollment. This levy represents the first operational levy to increase our districts’ funding since 2009.
