Literacy
This week we reviewed the letters Cc, Pp, and Nn, focusing on the sounds each letter makes and the correct formation of each capital and lowercase letter. We will continue to work on both as all students are all at different levels. Please check their work as it comes home. Some students are reversing certain letters each time they write them. The letters “c” and “p” are often ones that students write backwards. Students also made a crab picture for the letter Cc.
Snap Word Lists
Every Friday, your child brings home a word list to practice for their “Snap Word Books”. I test them each Friday. Even 5 min. of practice a night on the words they’ve missed really helps! J
Math
This week, we practiced “adding in any order”. We also practiced using the math words “addend”, “sum”, “minus’, “subtract”, “equals”, “part”, and “whole”. Students used a number line and “counting back” to subtract. Students also saw how addition and subtraction are “related”. Ex. 4 + 3 = 7 so, 7 – 4 = 3. Any practice you can do at home with flashcards would be great!
We are working on having everyone remember that all the teens start with a 1, all the 20’s start with a 2, all the 30’s start with a 3, etc. Any practice you could do with reading and writing (without reversals) double-digit numbers would be great! The 1st grade expectation is that that by the end of the 1st Trimester, students can read/write numbers to 50. Also, practicing skip-counting by 10’s (10, 20, 30 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100) would be really helpful. J
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we’ve talked about where we live starting with our planet, continent, country, state, county, and town. Students made their own books called “Me On The Map”. Students are also learning about urban (city), suburban, and rural (country) communities.

Every day a blue folder will come home containing schoolwork and any handouts, permission slips, or notes from me or from the office. Please check your child’s folder each day when he/she gets home. Folders need to be sent back to school every day and I check for notes, permission slips, etc. in the morning.
If there is a change in your child’s daily routine, such as a bus change or that he/she will be picked up, please go on to the WGS website and use PickUp Patrol OR let me know by sending a note in the folder. Please make sure that all notes have your child’s first and last name, the date, and my name. That will ensure that the office has all the information they need.
Lots of papers came home today! (Unless you picked them up at Open House.) Please fill out any forms in the “Return To School” pocket on the left and return them to me. The papers on the right are for your information.
Free breakfast is offered to every student from 8:10 – 8:40. Due to our start time, breakfast in the classroom, and lunch from 11:25 – 11:50, we do not have morning snack time. We will be having an afternoon snack. We have an early lunch and those bellies would be rumbling by the time school gets out!

Our First Week - Friday, September 2, 2022
Off to a Great Start!
The students are getting used to our daily routine. This is an amazing group of children! We are going to have a wonderful year together! We have 15 students in our class. We’re all getting to know each other and I can’t wait to get back to school next week! We are working on following the classroom rules based on our core values: Responsibility, Cooperation, Respect, Compassion, and Integrity.

5. Listen to others when they are talking
We have talked about why those rules are important and what the consequences are if the rules aren’t followed:
1. Think About It (the student’s words & actions)

Math
This week all 1st graders took a Math Placement Test. It allows us to see what each student knows/remembers about different math skills taught in Kindergarten. We also did an assessment on writing the numbers 1-50 (given in random order). A number written backward is counted as an error. Please keep an eye out for reversals on papers that come home. It is common, developmentally, at this age. Once students become aware of the numbers they write backwards, they can begin to check for them.
Literacy
On Thursday, I gave the Sound/Symbol assessment (I say a letter sound and students need to write the letter). I also gave the Alphabet Letter assessment (I say the letter and students write the capital and lowercase. If the formation is incorrect or it’s written backward, it is marked as an error). I’ll go over the results with you during our fall conference so you’ll know the letters your student will be focusing on mastering.
Color Weeks
For the first several weeks of the school year, the entire school celebrates a different color each week. We encourage all students and school staff to wear the color on Fridays. We start next week with red. A calendar was sent home in the blue folder on Wednesday. I will remind you in each Friday newsletter what the color for the upcoming week will be.
Breakfast
WGS provides a free breakfast for all students. We hope everyone will participate. If you drop off your child at school and want them to have the breakfast, please try to be here no later than 8:20. That will allow for your child to have time to eat and clean up before the bell rings at 8:40.
