Runners of the Week
Congratulations to the Runners of Week, Eli Aguirre and Stella Braga! Both and Eli and Stella are new to cross country but have finished in the top 5 in multiple races this year. Eli is an excellent teammate who always cheers and support his fellow runners. Stella has been super consistent in all her races and practices and always does so with a positive attitude and a smile. Congrats Eli and Stella.
Marblehead vs Winthrop
Congratulations to the boys' and girls' cross-country team in their meet yesterday against Marblehead at Deer Island. Both Winthrop teams raced well but couldn't best the two strong Marblehead teams. Top 5 Winthrop finishers in the girls' race were Amelia Castro, Stella Braga, Teresa Beuoy, Mia Rossi, and Jiavanna Clarke. Top 5 Winthrop finishers in the boys' race were Tomas Verdaguer, Brendan Murphy, Franco Ferrara, Eli Aguirre, and Max Murray. Congrats to all the runners!

Runners of the Week
Congratulations to Amelia Castro and Samuel Murphy for being named Runners of the Week. Samuel and Amelia are new to the team and in last week’s race Amelia earned a season’s best 2nd place overall and Sam earned 2nd for Winthrop Runners. Samuel has displayed strong leadership, excellent sportsmanship, and is positive force amongst teammates. Amelia brings intense focus to all her races and practices. Congrats Amelia and Samuel.
Winthrop vs Peabody
Congratulations to the middle school cross country team for surviving their race through the swarms of bees in the Peabody woods. The boys lost their race but had strong finishes from Tomas Verdaguer, Sam Murphy, Franco Ferrara, Abraham Quijada, and Leon Martin despite the many bee stings. The girls won their race with top finishers Amelia Castro, Teresa Beuoy, Mia Rossi, Stella Braga, and Jiavanna Clarke. Congratulations to all the runners.

Week 3
This week's Runners of the Week are Teresa Beuoy and Franco Ferrara. Teresa has continued her winning ways from last year with her 1st place finish among Winthrop runners against Swampscott and a 3rd place finish among Winthrop runners against Hamilton-Wenham. Franco has been the ideal teammate in his previous two years with the team. As an eighth grader, Franco has proven to be the leader of the team with his infectious spirit and constant encouragement. Franco has been the 3rd place finisher for Winthrop runners in the past two meets. Congrats Teresa and Franco!
Swampscott vs Winthrop Meet - 9/18
Congratulations to the boys' and girls' cross country teams in their race against Swampscott yesterdays. The top finishers for the girls were Teresa Beuoy, Cate Harty, Amelia Castro, Stella Braga, and Aveen Toomey. Congratulations to the Cross-Country Teams Runners of the Week Mia Rossi and Tomas Verdaguer. Mia was the top Winthrop finisher in last week's week and has continued her winning ways in her second-year racing for Winthrop. Tomas finished first overall in last week's meet and has been Winthrop's top finisher in all practices this year. Congrats Mia and Tomas.

Congratulations to the Winthrop Middle School Cross Country Team in their meet yesterday against Hamilton-Wenham. The girls' race ended in a tie. Top runners for Winthrop were Mia Rossi, Cate Harty, Teresa Beuoy, Stella Braga, and Aveen Toomey. The boys won their meet with Tomas Verdaguer earning 1st place overall. We typically have practices on Tuesdays and Wednesday after school for an hour. On Thursdays we have meets against other schools. For away meets, we take buses and usually the team get home around 6. The home meets at Deer Island usually finish around 5:-5:30. During practices we run as a group around Winthrop and usually run about 1.5 miles. The main focus of middle school cross country is to get athletes to move their bodies outside and enjoy each other's company. It can be as competitive as the child wants it to be. Week 8
Northeastern Conference Meet in Gloucester
Congratulations to the boys and girls cross country team on a great race at the Northeast Conference Meet yesterday in Gloucester. In the boys race there were over 150 runners and Liam Connors finished in 11th, Johnny Poulos in 17th, and Tomas Verdaguer in 38th. In the girls race there were 144 runners and Mia Rossi finished in 33rd, Teresa Beuoy in 44th, and Era Marra in 60th. Other top runners for Winthrop were Ghofran Atoname, Aveen Toomey, Elvys Paula, and Tommy Reavey. Congrats to all the runners!

Runners of the Week
Congratulations to the Runners of The Week, eighth graders Era Marra and Elvys Paula. Both Era and Elvys are new to the team this year and both of them have earned points for the Vikings with strong races this season. Era's hard work and persistence has aided her steady progression as a runner and faster and faster race times. Elvys has inserted himself as a leader on the team and can always be depended on to give his all and support his teammates. Congrats Era and Elvys.

Congratulations to the boys and girls cross country team in their win yesterday against Lynn. In the girls' race Teresa Beouy earned 1st, Mia Rossi earned 2nd, Era Marra in 4th and Aveen Toomey in 5th. The boys swept all 5 top places with Liam Connors in 1st, Johnny Poulos in 2nd, Gavin Daugherty in 3rd , Matteo Agri in 4th and Elvys Paula in 5th. Congratulations to all the runners.

Congratulations to the Runners of the Week; seventh graders Ghofran Atonane and Franco Ferrara. Ghofran is new to the team this year and has competed well with multiple top 5 finishes. Ghofran is a great teammate who is finding her leadership voice among the team. Franco has been a model teammate since his first practices in sixth grade. As a seventh grader, Franco is a teammate who can always be counted on to do the right thing and always supports his fellow runners. Congrats Ghofran and Franco.

Congratulations to the boys' and girls' cross-country team in their win yesterday against Danvers. Earning points in the girl's race were Teresa Beouy in second, Mia Rossi in third, and Aveen Toomey in 5th. Other top Winthrop finishers were Abby Healey and Ghofran Atonane. Congratulations to the Runners of the Week, seventh-grader Abby Healey and sixth-grader Tomas Verd-a-gur. Abby has been a tremendous runner of the past 2 years and had her highest finish last week in the meet against Beverly where she finished 3rd for Winthrop. Tomas is showing strong promise in his first year on the cross-country team. Tomas finished 4th for Winthrop in the meet against Beverly and has steadily improved his times throughout the season. Congradulations to the Cross Country Team in their meet yesterday in Beverly. The girls ran hard against a strong Beverly team. Top 5 Winthrop Runners were Mia Rossi, Aveen Toomey, Abby Healey, Era Marra, and Ollie Bandar. The boys earned a victory by winning places 2nd through 5th in the race. The meet vs Beverly on 10/3 will be held at McKeown PreSchool - 70 Balch St, Beverly. The race will start between 4 and 4:30.

Congratulations to seventh-grader Aveen Toomey and eighth grader Matteo Agri for being named Runners of the Week. Aveen had a strong week with a personal record on Track Tuesday and third for Winthrop against Beverly. Aveen has been a terrific teammate over the past 2 years and always bring strong effort to our practices and races. Matteo had his best week of the season finishing in third place overall against Beverly and logging a personal record on Track Tuesday. Matteo has developed into a strong leader for our team and his passion for the sport is unparalleled. Congrats Aveen and Matteo!

Congratulations to the cross-country team in their meet yesterday in the rain verse Bevery at Deer Island. The girls ran hard against a strong Beverly team. Top 5 finishers for Winthrop were Teresa Beouy, Mia Rossi, Aveen Toomey, Abby Healy and Ghofran Atoname. On Tuesdays we run a 1.5 mile time trial on the Miller Field track. The athletes' times are compared to previous time trials so we can monitor progress. The following athletes have improved their performance compared to the previous week:

Our Runners of the Week are sixth grader Mia Rossi and eighth grader Liam Connors. Mia is a first year runner and earned first place overall in the girls' race against Saugus. Mia is a great addition to our team and brings strong effort to all of our practices. Liam is a third year runner and earned first place overall in the boys' race against Saugus. Liam has made tremendous growth over the past couple of years and he looks ready to assume leadership roles for our team. Congrats Mia and Liam!

Lewis Lake Duck Run!
We ran a route from the school, along Cross Street, on to River Road, into Lewis Lake Park, over the Lewis Lake Bridge and back. The goal of this workout was gaining experience running on grass and gravel and extending endurance to 1.5 miles.
Wednesday Practice - 9/4
We ran a route from the school, along Cross Street, on to River Road, up Thornton Street, around Thornton Park and back. Athletes were challenged to run up Thornton Street twice. The goal is to learn how to pace up hill.
Tuesday Practice - 9/3
Two laps around the school and the baseball fields. The goal is to complete the run without stopping.

Massachusetts State Middle School Cross Country Championships - 11/4/23
Devens, MA
Congratulations to Matteo Agri, Bailey Beal, and Hailey DeMarco for running in Massachusetts State Middle School Cross Country Championships. Bailey came in 74th out of 222 in the 6th-grade race, Matteo came in 91st out of 236 in 7th-grade race, and Hailey DeMarco came in 82nd out of 140 in the 8th-grade race. Congrats to our runners, you represented Winthrop well.

Monday Practice - 10/23
Today's practice was the middle school double loop. Athletes ran two laps, totaling 1 mile around the school and the fields. This was the first workout the team did this year and the point of running it again was for them to feel how much easier it feels to run a mile when you have undergone conditioning.

Congratulations to sixth graders Michaela Connolly and Ryan Choukri for being named last week's Runners of the Week. Michaela has had an excellent season so far and has been improving steadily. Michaela gives her best effort at every practice, and it is starting to show in how she races at meets. Ryan has proven to be a fantastic member of the team. Ryan brings enthusiasm, positivity, and a love for the sport to every practice and to every meet. The future of the middle school cross country team is bright with young athletes like Michaela and Ryan on board. Congrats!

Wednesday Practice - 10/19
Today's practice was the River Road Hill Run. Last week we attempted to complete this workout but there was some misunderstanding of the route so we tried again. Athletes successful ran the route this time.
Tuesday Practice - 10/17
Today's practice was a 1.5 mile run around Miller Field. Athletes were given goal times based on their most previous race pace and their most recent time running 1.5 miles on Miller Field. Practice was cut short today due to rain.
Runners of the Week - Week 5
Congratulations to 7th grader Kesharine Collins and 8th grader Simon Pelletier for being named last week's Cross Country Runners of the Week! Simon has shown good leadership as an older member of the team and provides good humor to every practice. Last week Simon displayed exemplary sportsmanship when he stopped in the middle of his race to help a fellow runner who was in need of assistance. Kesharine is a second-year runner with the team and has shown tremendous growth. During this season she has taken over 2 minutes off her average mile pace and consistently finishes in the top 5 among the Winthrop girls. Congrats to Kesharine and Simon!

Congratulations to the boys and girls cross country teams in their meet yesterday against Swampscott. The Vikings raced valiantly against a Swampscott team of over 100 runners. Today's practice was a hill workout along River Road. Athletes ran down Cross Street, up Buchanan, up Chester, up Thorton, up Bates, up Lewis, and along River Road back to Cross Street.
Tuesday - 10/10
Today's practice was a timed 1.5 mile race on the track at Miller Field. Each athlete was given a time they had to beat based on their pace from last week's race. After the race, athletes completed strength training drills of squats, lunges, and calf raises.
Runners of the Week - Week 4
Congratulations to sixth graders Olivia Bandar and Franco Ferrara for being named last week's Cross Country Runners of the Week! Franco has made strong improvements in his race times and has continued to be a valued teammate. Franco has been at the finish line of every race and every workout cheering on his fellow runners with his contagious spirit. Olivia started the season off unable to run because of an injury but continued to come to practice to support her team. Once Olivia was cleared to run, her progression as a runner was quick as she posted a 3rd place finish in last week's meet. Congrats Franco and Olivia!

Congratulations to the middle school cross country team in their meet yesterday against Saugus. The boys won their meet with Ryder Brennan in 1st, Gavin Dougherty in 2nd, Simon Cardona in 3rd, and Liam Connors and Thomas Reavey gutting it out for 4th and 5th. The girls also won their meet with Hailey DeMarco in 1st, Bailey Beal in 2nd, Olivia Bandar in 3rd, Aveen Toomey in 4th, and Edyn Ferullo in 5th. Congrats to all runners!

Today's workout was a 1.5 mile interval run on the track at Miller Field. Athletes ran a full lap as fast as they could without stopping. On the next lap, athletes ran as slow as possible without walking. Athletes ran alternativing laps in this fashion for a total of 6 laps(1.5miles). After the workout, the atheletes completed static stretches.
Tuesday - 10/4
Today's workout was the Watertower Hill Run. Athletes ran from Veterans Road exit of Millerfield, up to Shore Drive, down toward Faunbar, up Watertower Hill and back. This was a "turn-around run".

Bailey displayed athletic excellence in last week's meet when she earned 2nd place. Bailey also earned 2nd place in the team meet earlier this season. She is making impressive improvements this year. The boys won their race with a 2nd place finish from Ryder Brennan and a 3rd place finish from Gavin Dougherty. The boys sealed their win with top finishes from Thomas Reavy, Simon Cardona, and Matteo Argi. In the girls race Haily DeMarco earned 1st place and Bailey Beal earned 2nd. Wednesday Practice - 9/27
The workout today for the athletes was a 2-mile(8 laps) run on the track at Miller Field. The focus of the workout was pacing so they could complete the full run without stopping. Runners were encouraged to run as slow as possible without walking. A major principle emphasized was learning to be comfortable with discomfort. After the run, the athletes completed static stretches.
Tuesday Practice - 9/26
Athletes ran the Thorton Park Double Loop to prepare for their race at Deer Island on Thursday. The focus of the run is learning to how to pace up a steep incline. The athletes ran up Thorton Street two times because the course on Deer Island has a steep incline they will have to run twice. After the run, the athletes completed strength conditioning drills including squats, lunges, and calf raises.

Congratulations to 7th grader Matteo Agri and 6th grader Aveen Toomey for being named last week's Runners of the Week. Matteo is proving to be an amazing teammate as he encourages all his fellow runners during workouts to do their best. Matteo also had a strong finish in last weeks meet against Peabody. Aveen has been making excellent progress this year and showed outstanding sportsmanship during last weeks meet when she stopped during her race to help a teammate who had fallen. Aveen sacrificed valuable time during the race to help someone in need. Congrats to both Aveen and Matteo.

Congratulations to all the Winthrop Middle School Cross Country runners for their first meet yesterday at Deer Island. The team raced a challenging 1.7-mile course around the island that included straight-aways along Boston harbor, an off-road path up a giant kill, and a steep downhill to the finish. In the girls' race eighth-grader Hailey DeMarco came in 1st place, sixth-grader Bailey Beal in 2nd place, and seventh grader Kesharine Collins in 3rd Place. In the boys' race sixth-grader Ryder Brennen earned 1st, seventh-grader Thomas Reavey in 2nd, and seventh-grader Gavin Dougherty in 3rd. Congrats to all the runners!
