Youth programming that operates during out-of-school time can play an important role in positive youth development. By providing kids with out-of-school experiences that are safe, supportive and enriching they are better prepared to develop into critically thinking, socially aware and compassionate individuals.
Benefits of Summer Camp and Out of School Opportunities:
Physical activity and health – These experiences can provide an outlet for energy through purposeful movement and activity: Running, swimming, jumping, hiking, climbing, and more!
The opportunity to experience success and gain confidence – Children build self-confidence and self-esteem by being provided with opportunities to experience success every day.
Resiliency – The kind of encouragement and nurture kids receive at camp and at out-of-school programming makes it a great environment to endure and overcome setbacks, try new (and maybe a little bit frightening) activities, and learn that improvement can happen when you just keep trying!
Opportunity to unplug from technology – When kids take a break from TV, cell phones, and the internet, they rediscover their own creative powers and engage the real world— real people, real activities, and real emotions. They realize that there is always plenty to do.
Develop life-long skills – Out-of-school programming can provide instruction, structure, and resources for kids to enhance their sports abilities, their artistic/creative talents, and their adventure skills. There are so many different opportunities available, that it makes it easy for kids to discover and develop their interests and talents.
Grow independence– Camp can be the perfect place for kids to practice making decisions for themselves without adults guiding every move. Managing their own daily choices in the safe, nurturing environment of camp, children are able to welcome this as a freedom to blossom in new directions.
Have free time for unstructured play – Camp can also be free from the overly-structured, overly-scheduled routines that children and adolescents may experience throughout the school year. Therefore, camp provides the much needed free time to just play and provides carefree living where kids can relax, laugh, and be silly all day long.
Learn and improve social skills – Participating in a safe and supportive out-of-school program means joining a cooperative and nurturing community where everyone learns to respect each other. Additionally, when kids sleep away at camp with others, they share chores, resolve disagreements, and see firsthand the importance of sincere communication.
Connect with nature – Outdoor experiences enrich kids' (and adults') perception of the world and support healthy child development.
Make true (and new) friends – All the fun at out-of-school programming draws everyone together— singing, laughing, talking, playing, doing almost everything together -everyday!
