Coaching Staff

Coach Gilbertson comes to the program after coaching from 2009-2015. He played his high school baseball at Eau Claire North and Eau Claire American Legion. Starting as a Freshman assistant in 2009, he worked his way up to Varsity assistant for a few years, before stepping away in 2015 to work on his Masters Degree. A graduate of Winona State University in Education, he has taught in the district since 2015. Gilbertson has coached Varsity football for 13 years and girls basketball for 5. Married in 2021 to his wife Heather also a teacher in Lake City, they welcomed their first child (Tate) in 2022 and their second son (Wes) in 2024. Coach Gilbertson is proud to say his fun-loving yellow lab is named after the best field in baseball, Wrigley.

Favorite Baseball Team - Chicago Cubs

Coach Steinhoff comes to the program after coaching at Tomah High School from 2011-2015. He played his high school baseball at Tomah High School and Tomah American Legion Post 201 where he was a two time All-Conference player as a junior and senior. Coach Steinhoff also played college baseball at UW-Whitewater and UW-LaCrosse where he played catcher, outfield and DH.  Starting as a JV head coach for a few years and working his way up to a varsity assistant before stepping away when he moved to Winona during the summer of 2015 to live with his girlfriend Jolene Danca and her two boys, Riley and Logan.  Coach Steinhoff has coached varsity football in the district since 2016.  He is a fundraising coach, virtual driver's ed teacher and owner of Eupraxia-Winona with his girlfriend Jolene! 

Favorite Baseball Team - Milwaukee Brewers

Coach Hoeppner comes to the Baseball program after working the last 6 years with the Winhawk Softball program. Coach Hoeppner is familiar with Winona Baseball as he has been involved with the Winona American Legion Baseball program since 1985 as coach/manager. Hoeppner also previously coached JV Baseball at WSHS. Hoeppner also works with the girls basketball program and is a safety specialist at WSHS. Hoeppner retired after a 25 year career in Law Enforcement with the Winona Police Department, he has two adult daughters who graduated from WSHS and were three sport athletes.

Coach Steine returns to the Winhawk Baseball Program where he coached various levels from 2007-2010. He spent 4 years as a Varsity Reserve coach for the Onalaska Baseball team from 2012-2015. Coach Steine has been a varsity assistant for the football team since 2006 and an assistant coach for boys basketball in Winona (2006-2010, 2016) and girls basketball in Onalaska (2010-2015). He graduated high school from Blair-Taylor where he was a four sport athlete participating in football, basketball, track, and baseball. He is a math teacher at the high school and is currently working on his masters in sports management at Winona State University. Coach Steine is married to Brittney Steine, the head gymnastics coach and a teacher in the district, and has two sons named Treven(8) and Quinten(6).

 Coach Larson enters his 11th year with the Winona Winhawks Baseball Program.  He played baseball for the Winhawks in the early 2000s.  He received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Winona State University.  Currently, Dusty is the Physical Education/DAPE teacher and After School Care/Enrichment Clubs Coordinator for Ridgeway Community School and coaches middle school cross country, basketball, and archery.  Dusty is also a huge Minnesota Sports Fan!

      Favorite Baseball Team - Minnesota Twins

Coach Hundorf, a Winhawk Baseball Alumni returns to the program after wrapping up his playing career. He played Varsity Baseball for Winona High in 2021 and 2022 and was a part of the 2022 State Team. He also played for the Winona Legion baseball team the Winona LeJetz. He went on to continue his baseball career as a pitcher for Winona State University for one year in 2023 before he decided to wrap it up and focus more in the classroom. He brings a positive attitude and the desire to make a difference in young men's lives. He is currently a sophomore undergraduate student at Winona State and is studying in the field of Psychology with aspirations of becoming a Clinical Psychologist someday.

Hobbies: Playing/Coaching Baseball, Deer Hunting, Spending Time with Family

Coach Bittle has been coaching for the past two years with the previous program.  He is a former alumnus of Winona Senior High School who played in the Winhawk Baseball program, as well as Winona VFW and Legion throughout his high school summer breaks.  He is currently finishing his undergraduate at Winona State University majoring in Physical Education, DAPE, and Health.  This fall, Coach Bittle is currently the assistant coach for the girl's Varsity tennis squad at the WSHS. In his free time, he enjoys working out, golfing, and going on the river with his friends and family.
