Girls Who Code

The mission of the Girls Who Code organization is to close the gender gap in technology by providing girls in the 3rd-12th grades with opportunities to learn more about computer science and to reimagine what a computer programmer looks like.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, females are statistically underrepresented in Computer Science career fields, despite the fact that the number of jobs available in these fields continues to climb. By exposing our female students to Computer Science principles at a young age, we are introducing them the 21st century skills that are and will be necessary in their ability to pursue jobs in prolific and profitable professions within a highly competitive job market.

The provided curriculum will focus on three main components: sisterhood, code, and bravery/impact. As a club devoted to exposing girls to hands on computer science experiences, the collaborative and supportive environment of other female peers encourages sisterhood among its members. Girls will learn the essential concepts of loops, variables, conditionals, and functions that compose the basis for all computer programming languages. Finally, the curriculum will help participating students learn about how to positively impact their environment and community through the use of code as well as how to be brave and resilient.

  • Students will have at least one weekly after school practice that they must attend.

  • Participating students will have this as their in-school club for the second half of the school year.
