Established in 2003

Darden Middle School, established in 2003, is proud to bear the name of such a strong Wilson figure! C.H. Darden High School opened in 1923 and was built using mainly African American contractors; it was Wilson’s first high school for African Americans. Originally called the Wilson Colored High School it opened in 1924, and in 1939, it was renamed Darden in memory of Charles H. Darden, a former slave who became a funeral home owner and one Wilson’s most prominent African American leaders and proponents of education. When Darden Middle School was constructed in 2003, it was a perfect opportunity to carry on the namesake!
