Spanish class will be fun, challenging, and rewarding! Students will acquire a second language most effectively by being immersed in it, much like they acquired their first language. Spanish classes will be taught by optimizing immersion using Acquisition-Driven Instruction through Comprehensible Input. Our class activities are designed to provide students with many opportunities to be involved in the Spanish language at or just above their level of understanding. Each language-building activity is designed to introduce or strengthen the understanding of high frequency words and phrases in Spanish. Integrated performance assessments will all students to demonstrate proficiency through interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational tasks.
What will Spanish class look like? FUN! Some typical activities are:
Content Connections Math and science IN SPANISH?? Why not? Direct and indirect object pronouns exist in both English and Spanish?? They do, indeed. The past influences so much of the present: art, architecture, food, celebrations, etc. We will be making cultural and content connections to solidify student learning.
Reading We will be reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. Books and activities will be differentiated to encourage growth throughout the varying proficiency levels of our students.
Acting We LOVE to act our stories out. Many times, we will read a story and then reenact it from scratch. We will change the ending, write a prequel, sequel....the possibilities are as endless as our imaginations.
Songs I am not a talented singer, but I sure am an enthusiastic one! We will be listening to, learning, and singing songs on a regular basis. SPOILER ALERT: We may learn some dances, too!
Games We have a number of games based on comprehensible input that help students to acquire language and create strong, positive relationships within the classroom environment.
Projects There are opportunities each marking period for students to use art and technology to make connections/comparisons and share information about language and culture.
Video viewing We use videos and audio clips to expose students to different accents from different countries.
Señor Wooly is a wonderful, wacky website that we use in class and for homework. Sr. Wooly uses music videos and graphic novels to bombard students with comprehensible input in a rhythmic, repetitive way that students enjoy so much- they don't even realize they are learning!
