David Kim
I walk past Mr. Kim's picture on the Wall of Honor at North High School every day. When I learned that Mr. David Kim, the esteemed concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, would be performing with the Orchard Park Symphony, I thought to myself, "it would be an incredible opportunity for students to have a masterclass with him". I was thrilled that Mr. Kim was wonderfully receptive to the idea of returning as a guest alumnus and generously offered his time and expertise to work with the students.
About Our Guest Artist
Mr. David Kim's background and achievements are nothing short of remarkable. Although various sources state different graduation years, Mr. Kim clarified that he graduated in 1979. He graduated early, during his sophomore year, to attend Juilliard—a significant accomplishment. As the long-time concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the world's top symphonic institutions, he stands among the top violinists in the country. He is also the only American to have won a prize at the renowned International Tchaikovsky Competition.
Born in Illinois and later moving to the Buffalo region, Mr. Kim spent his high school years in Williamsville, traveling to Juilliard on weekends for their pre-collegiate programs. He earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Juilliard and has been the concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1999.
The Masterclass Experience
Mr. Kim's hour-long visit to North High School was divided into two segments. The first half-hour was a Q&A session, where students asked about his high school experience, career, and achievements. This was followed by a masterclass, where three students performed for Mr. Kim and received feedback. Each student's turn included notes and suggestions from Mr. Kim, which the entire audience could learn from.
The highlight of the masterclass was Mr. Kim's charismatic and frank communication with the students, especially during the Q&A session. He spoke openly about his high school experience, his work with his renowned Juilliard teacher Dorothy DeLay, and life as a top concertmaster. His engaging demeanor left a lasting impression on the students, who found his insights invaluable.
Student Development
The students' response to Mr. Kim's guidance was overwhelmingly positive. They appreciated the advice, with some aspects being completely new to them. One student, who observed the masterclass without participating, was particularly enthusiastic about what he had learned. The masterclass was attended by about a hundred North High orchestra students, including all string players. Hosting the event in the new orchestra room provided a more intimate and collegial setting.
Community and Support
The organization of the masterclass was supported by the Williamsville Music Boosters, who covered the entire cost. After securing Mr. Kim's participation, I reached out to Ms. Jaime Pitnell, the WCSD Music Department Coordinator, who suggested contacting the Boosters. Their support was instrumental in making the event possible. On behalf of the North High orchestra students, I want to thank the Williamsville Music Boosters for their incredible support!
