Marjorie Williams Academy uses a 5-point grading scale.
Level 1 is the lowest grade possible, while Level 5 is the highest grade possible. The grading scale we use in our math classroom is found below. Examples of work corresponding with each level are also included.
Mastery: the student is able to complete 90% of the concept correctly.
Has the correct answer, shows all work, all work is correct
Proficient: the student is able to complete 80% of the concept correctly.
Has the correct answer, but shows only some (but not all) work
Developing: the student is able to complete 70% of the concept correctly.
Has the correct answer, but shows no work
Beginning: this describes the level expected when a new concept is introduced.
Shows work, but the work and/or the answer is incorrect
Remedial: this describes the level when a student lacks foundational knowledge to grasp a new concept or does not progress after repeated instruction.
Has an incorrect answer and shows no work
Mistakes are encouraged in my class. Mistakes teach us how to think, how to reflect, and ultimately how to find the correct solution.
I would rather a student try and get it wrong than a student only try when they are sure of the correct answer.
In my class, cool-downs are a daily mini-quiz grade. Cool-downs are EOG-style questions and are a significant part of your grade.
On a piece of paper, write:
Your name, grade, and today’s date
The name of the assignment(s) you want to replace
If you have more than one assignment you would like to replace, make a list where you name each one in bullet point form.
Turn in this paper into the turn-in bin.
You must complete the replacement assignments in class, either during your bell ringer time or after school on Tuesdays/Thursdays. Students must be picked up at 4:00 if they choose to stay after school.
