To find the right book for your child, start by identifying their Lexile number. Your child should be able to read a book within 50 point of their lexile. For example, if your child's score is 480, then they should be able to read books from 430 to 530.
430-480: (up to 50 point below score)
- Easy read.
- Purpose- Fluency practice.
- Parental Support: Time how many words your child reads in a minute.
480: (At score)
- Just right, at their level.
- Purpose- Read for comprehension.
- Parental Support: Ask Challenging questions.
490-530: (up to 50 points above score)
- Challenging Read, books must of a high interest topic for your child.
- Purpose- Use of Clarification (understanding words, sentences and paragraphs) and building vocabulary.
- Parental Support: Ask your child what new words they learned. Have your child retell paragraphs for understanding.
