Message from the Principal:

Good afternoon everyone,

It really does feel like summer term now that we have the sun shining for us, and it’s been lovely to see the children enjoying their outdoor sports and playing on the field in the sunshine at lunchtimes. We have lots to share this week as we’ve had cricket and football matches, violin performances and the much- awaited school maths challenge to name a few. A big well done to 4V on their maths victory! All four year groups have made me proud this week, with some fantastic contenders for our book of excellence. I’ve also been impressed with year 3 as they’ve all being diving into their salad tasting during their DT project, and with year 5 showing off their violin playing. Year 6 have been producing some fabulous writing, and year 4 have brought me some excellent food chains in science. Well done everyone!

I will also share with you some exciting news from the staff team this week; Miss Footitt will be getting married this weekend and so will be returning after the holidays as Mrs Newell! I’m sure you’ll join me in offering our congratulations and best wishes.

We return to school after the break on Monday 5 th June. Can I remind everyone of the Training Day which falls at the end of the second week back; Friday 16 th June as school will be closed for pupils on this day. There will of course be lots of events packed into our final half term so please keep an eye on the dates on the newsletters and the messages coming out with details as each event nears. Can I ask year 5 parents to look out for a letter coming home tonight with details of the year 5 sleepover.

Please enjoy looking at what the children have been learning and have a lovely half term

break everyone.

S Sargent

Principal

Take a look at what we have been up to...

YEAR 3

We have been working our socks off this week in a variety of exciting lessons. During literacy we have been finishing our writing draft about 'The Lion and The Butterfly". This is our own fable based on the plot of a lonely lion and a terrified butterfly who unexpectedly make friends.

We have been learning how to tell the time to the nearest minute and we can now read you what time it is! We have also discussed and practised using digital times so that we can read times on a range of devices. Please can you continue practising this with the children during the half term holidays so that they continue to make progress in this area.

This week we have been researching all about how to make the perfect salad during our DT sessions. We took some time to research pre-made salads, we tasted lots of delicious fresh produce and made our own party salad.

YEAR 4

We have been busy in Year 4! In art we have been studying the work of Andy Goldsworthy. After looking closely at his pieces, we had the chance to go outside and try to create some pieces for ourselves. We really enjoyed collecting various natural resources, focusing on colour and shape. In literacy, we have been planning and writing a 'Myths and Legends' story. We have really enjoyed creating our characters and settings for the Myth to take place!

In maths, we are beginning our unit on time. We are revising how to tell the time before moving on to being able to convert between analogue and digital. Our multiplication check is coming up in June so please keep encouraging your child to go on Rockstars!

YEAR 5

This week, year 5 have started a new Maths unit. They have been learning how to add and subtract decimals and find compliments to 1. In Literacy We've been writing persuasively. We have written a letter to presidents around the world to persuade them to stop whaling and argued the reasons against it. We have also done some diary writing as a character from our current book, The Lost Whale by Hannah Gold, and have really enjoyed it.

This week has also been science week for year 5. We have been learning bout sound and how we hear sound, how it travels, how pitch changes and even created our own enquiry question and investigation. In Art we have been looking at Ben Day Dots and have created our own art work in Liechtenstein's style.

YEAR 6

Our week began with Marvellous Monday, a fantastic treat to celebrate the children's efforts in SATs. The children enjoyed a range of activities that they'd chosen themselves: Just Dance, arts and crafts, football, board games, netball and the icecream man even paid them a visit in the afternoon on the field. The children enjoyed music, glitter painting and games - luckily the sunshine held out long enough for us! We've begun writing a non-chronological report on polar bears, inspired by our book The Last Bear! The children have worked really well and focused on their year 6 writing objectives and demonstrating rich vocabulary. In art week, we've delved deeper into sculpture and looked at famous sculptures such as the Angel of the North and Andy Warhol's 'Brillo Box'. We then designed our own sculpture and planned how to create this using a range of different materials and methods. We've also competed in 'maths challenge' focusing on measures - which class will win?

Y5 Musical performance

Year 5 children performed a short musical concert this afternoon for their parents.

They sang and played violins, showcasing what they have learned with Jo and Olivia Townell this year.

Maths Challenge

On Tuesday we held a whole school maths challenge based around the topic of measures. Traditionally, this has been an area of maths that has previously caused a few misconceptions for some of our children, however, we were amazed by how hard they worked and how much effort they had put into answering these questions. It was great to see the children working together as a team to tackle some tricky problems.  The all important results were revealed in Wednesday's assembly with class 4V being the winners- huge congratulations to 4V!

The results for each round are published below:

Cricket Festival

23 pupils went to a cricket festival at Havelock Academy. This event enabled the pupils to practice key skills needed to play cricket. We started off with a warm up before going into a simple catching game in pairs. We then played a cricket race to practice running with a bat in hand. Most of us even beat Mr Dawes!  After that, we then practiced batting the ball and learning how to hold a cricket bat correctly. We finished with a game of cricket where we applied all of our skills into the game. Massive thank you to Miss Phillips and Mr Dennett from Havelock Academy for the excellent session, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

William Barcroft v Woodlands Primary

On Wednesday, Woodlands Primary came across to William Barcroft to play a football friendly for both year 5/6 girls and boys. Both schools behaved impeccably and we can't wait to face each other again and possibly other schools in our Harbour Learning Trust family. Both games were 20 minutes long with a 5 minute half time break.

Girls Match: William Barcroft 2 v 1 Woodlands Primary

The Barcroft girls got off to a flying start curtesy of Alexise, who fired us in front after 4 minutes. Alexise had a few more shots but these were saved well by the Woodlands goalkeeper. We went into half time with a 1-0 lead. William Barcroft started the second half like the first with a smashing goal by Alexise (as seen in the photo). Woodlands applied the pressure on William Barcroft and this paid off as they pulled one back towards the end of the game. Paige had a great shot which had drifted wide. Lillie-Rose also had a shot which skimmed past the past. Alexise nearly grabbed a hat trick but her powerful shot also skimmed past the post. Great result for our girls as both teams played really well.

Boys Match: William Barcroft 4 v 1 Woodlands Primary

The Barcroft boys kicked off and for 7 minutes, both teams were unable to break each other down with Ethan and the Woodland's keeper making some great saves between them. Eventually, the deadlock was broken thanks to some great footwork from Louie who fired the ball low into the net. 2 minutes later, Robbie scored a fantastic goal of sheer quality with a beautiful volley fired into the roof of the net. William Barcroft went into half time 2-0 winners. William Barcroft were rampant and were looking for more goals. 2 minutes into the second half, a corner was fired in by Louie and Robbie got on the end of it to make it 3-0. A few more minutes later Tobias chased down a loose ball and collided with the Woodland's keeper to make it 4-0. Both boys went in fairly but the Woodland's keeper chose to go off after the collision, due to injury. A minute after kicking off Woodlands pulled one back but it proved only to be a consolation goal. A dominant display from the boys who looked like a different team to the one that drew 2-2 with Woodlands in January.

A massive thank you to Mr Bowden and Woodlands Primary for coming over, it was a pleasure to have you all with us and enjoy a fun afternoon. Such a rewarding treat after SATs. Well done to everyone that played today, you all did fantastically well and yet again have made Mr Dawes very proud!

This was part of Mental Health Awareness week regarding anxiety. Looking at tips and strategies to help.

Anxiety is a normal emotion. It is your body's defence system trying to tell you that it feels like you are facing a threat.

If you feel like you or a child need any support with your mental health please speak to a member of our staff.

Thank you.

Please see below message from the Humberside and Fire and Rescue Service:

As the late Bank Holiday approaches, with the potential of hotter days the appetite to cool off in open water increases.  This is a significant risk whilst the weather is so hot

We are therefore asking for your support.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could stress to your children and young people about the dangers of playing and swimming in open water for example; cold water shock, underwater obstacles and transition of waterborne diseases.
