On Easter Sunday, 2025, CastawayWU volunteers made a massive environmental impact at Cascades Gateway Park. With over 35 volunteers, the team removed more than 4,000 pounds of trash, including 25+ abandoned shopping carts, 200+ batteries, and over 40 discarded syringes. This was one of our most intensive cleanups to date, improving public safety, protecting water quality, and restoring critical habitat in a high-use urban area.

Our Second Willamette Cleanup Event! Thanks to the dedicated efforts of over 35 student volunteers from Willamette University, we successfully removed more than 2,000 pounds of trash from Salem parks. Our cleanup uncovered significant environmental hazards, including over a dozen discarded needles and 13 submerged shopping carts from Mill Creek. We're proud of the direct, positive impact our community-driven efforts have made on local waterways and parklands.
Our outstanding team, with the help of 15 volunteers, removed 500 pounds of trash from the Willamette River basin. Preventing pollutants from entering the river and affecting a much larger area. Through events like these, our team can make a difference in our local communities.
The Knots and Tots event was a lively and interactive gathering where attendees got the chance to learn essential knot-tying skills for fishing while indulging in a tasty treat—tater tots! The event was designed to blend a practical skill-building workshop with a laid-back, enjoyable atmosphere.
Participants learned the basics of fishing knots, including how to tie popular knots like the improved clinch knot and the loop knot, guided by experienced instructors. Each knot was explained step-by-step, with hands-on practice so attendees could perfect their technique.
The event featuring Kassi Roosth and Cesar Zamora from Marion Soil and Water Conservation District was a great success, providing valuable insights into environmental conservation and land management. Cesar shared his expertise on soil and cropland conservation, including his work with irrigation systems, cover crops, and livestock exclusion practices. He also highlighted his community outreach efforts and contributions to water quality monitoring. Kassi presented her role in supporting sustainable land practices, from habitat restoration to agricultural conservation. Together, they offered a comprehensive understanding of their impactful work in promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable solutions in the local community. The presentation was informative and enriching, leaving attendees with a deeper understanding of conservation efforts in the region.
The Trout Fishing trip at Detroit Reservoir was a huge success, with all participants reeling in fish throughout the day. The weather was perfect, and the calm waters made for an enjoyable experience for anglers of all skill levels. With plenty of bites and successful catches, the trip was filled with excitement, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories. Everyone left the reservoir with a sense of accomplishment and a great story to tell!
