There are so many certifications out there! Where do I start?
Cybersecurity isn't a straight-line journey for anyone, but here are some ideas for choosing your certification path.
You can never go wrong with CompTIA Security+. This is a certification most employers like (and sometimes expect) their employees/applicants to have.
Research online what you want. Cybersecurity is made up all sort of different paths (architecture, GRC, PenTesting, and way more). Take a look at this certification roadmap and see which certifications fall under the path you're most interested in!
And lastly, if you're already in the industry- advocate for yourself! Speak to your employer and see what certifications they'd like you to obtain. Often times they'll cover the cost of the exam and sometimes even study materials!
Where is a good place to find certification study material?
Oh man, there are so many good resources out there (paid, discounted, and free)! Generally, these websites are fantastic resources. If you have any recommendations, e-mail us!
Udemy - Udemy has a vast list of topics at heavily discounted rates. If something isn't discounted, wait a few days. When looking for Cybersecurity trainings, some of the big trainers to consider are Jason Dion, Total Seminars, and more!
LinkedIn Learning - LL is the same mindset as Udemy, but you pay a flat subscription fee. Are you currently in school? Talk with your advisors- they may offer free access when you sign in with school credentials!
Reddit - Go to the subreddit of whichever company manages the certification (ex: go to the CompTIA subreddit for Security+). Often folks who have just passed an exam will post all the study materials they used, and any tips & tricks they found handy. The moderators are pretty good at removing any posts that aren't allowed, but just use common sense here. If someone is posting questions and answers from the official exam they just took, that's cheating!
