May 2026
Welcome to the May edition of the WPT Newsletter!
As we come to the end of this half term, it’s been wonderful to see so much enthusiasm, hard work, and success across our schools. From memorable learning experiences in the classroom to celebrations, events, and achievements beyond it, our pupils and staff have made this a half term to be proud of.
Thank you to everyone for your continued support throughout this busy few weeks. We wish all of our families a happy and relaxing half term break and look forward to seeing everyone return refreshed and ready for the final stretch of the school year.
School Games Colour Run
A huge congratulations to all students from across our Trust who took part in this year's Rotherham School Games Colour Run on Friday, helping to raise an incredible £14,600+ for Rotherham Hospice. And still counting!
We were proud to host the event in partnership with Rotherham School Games on Rawmarsh Community School's fields. Over 1000 primary and 300 secondary students ran multiple laps of the 500-metre course while volunteers covered them in colourful paint powder along the way.
Y9/10 Oxford Trip
Earlier in May, we took a group of Y9 & Y10 students to visit Magdalen College, Oxford. The students were able to learn about the college and higher education, before a tour of the grounds. They also experienced lunch in the grand hall, and a walking tour of Oxford University.
At the end of the day, the students took part in an Earth Sciences session, focused on fossils. It was such a fantastic experience!
TCS Mini London Marathon
In April, every student at Sandhill took part in the TCS Mini London Marathon and it was an absolutely fantastic event it was!
All of our children, from Foundation Stage through to Year 6, took on the challenge of running laps of the field, aiming to reach the full marathon distance of 26.2 miles. They didn’t just meet the challenge, they exceeded it. Together, our students covered 36 miles, and, most importantly, everyone had a brilliant time!
Student Council Visit Mayor
On Tuesday, members of the Thrybergh Academy Student Council visited Rotherham Town Hall to meet the Mayor of Rotherham. The students enjoyed an excellent tour, where they learned more about the history of both Rotherham and Thrybergh, while also having the opportunity to ask lots of thoughtful questions.
Thank you to the Mayor for such a warm welcome, and providing such an inspiring experience!
WPT Shortlisted for SEND Award
We’re proud to share that our Trust has been shortlisted for the SEND Excellence Award at the School & Trust Leadership Awards.
This nomination reflects a shared approach across all 13 schools, where SEND provision is woven into everyday practice, and inclusion is shaped through strong relationships, trauma-informed approaches and consistent Trust-wide development. It also recognises the impact of our Additional Resource Provisions, designed to strengthen pathways back into mainstream learning and support every learner to feel seen, understood and able to succeed.
We’re grateful to everyone across our Trust community whose commitment makes this possible!
Y2 Materials Walk in Science
Year 2 went on a materials walk as part of their science learning. They explored both inside and outside the school to identify what different parts of the school are made from. Afterwards, the children returned to the classroom to discuss whether the materials used were suitable for each feature they had found.
Status Quo Legend Visits Whitehill
We had a very special guest visit Brinsworth Whitehill this term – Jeff Rich, former drummer of iconic British rock band Status Quo!
Jeff led an exciting and interactive drum workshop for our KS2 children, sharing his passion for music and his extensive knowledge of percussion. He introduced the children to the history of drums, demonstrated a wide range of percussion instruments and even invited students to have a go themselves.
WPT Schools Raise £8,900 for Charity!
Schools across our Trust have come together in an inspiring show of creativity and community spirit to support the Pride of Yorkshire fundraiser in aid of Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.
We have collectively raised an incredible £8,986!
This project, which is the charity’s biggest fundraising campaign yet, has seen students across several of our schools take part, most notably by painting their own lion cubs.
Keep an eye out at Meadowhall, Clifton Park Museum, Rotherham Leisure Centre, Magna Science Adventure Centre and across South Yorkshire for the cubs!
Cheerleading World Championships
Recently, a TGA student took part in the Cheerleading World Championships in the United States, and achieved an incredible result.
She won a gold medal, making her a back-to-back world champion. This is a truly outstanding accomplishment, and we couldn’t be more proud of her success. Well done!
MCC Cricket Event
In April, the Wickersley School 1st XI played their annual fixture against Marylebone Cricket Club, one of the most prestigious cricket clubs in the world, and the former governing body of the sport.
The match took place at Wickersley OVCC, where MCC chose to bat first. Wickersley made an early impact with A Berry taking two wickets, but MCC went on to score 269 before declaring. In response, Wickersley showed great resilience throughout the afternoon, eventually being bowled out in the final over of the day.
Platinum School Games Award
Here at Aston Hall, we have been awarded the prestigious School Games Platinum Mark for another academic year – the highest accolade of its kind. This is the second time the school has achieved the Platinum Award, a rare distinction held by only a small number of schools.
First Aid Session in Y5
Back in April, our Y5 pupils had an informative visit from First Aid instructors. They learned how to use EpiPens and practised the technique of abdominal thrusts to help in an emergency.
It was great to see everyone getting involved and having a go.
WPT Young Musician of the Year 2026
During May, we saw two fantastic evenings of talent at the WPT Young Musician of the Year Final, held at Rawmarsh Community School.
Students from across Wickersley Partnership Trust secondary schools took to the stage to showcase their musical abilities in front of an enthusiastic audience and a judging panel of music professionals.
One evening celebrated our vocalists, whilst the other was dedicated to our instrumentalists. Congratulations to all finalists who took part and represented their schools so brilliantly.
Stay tuned for the Primary Young Musician Final next month!
Young Writers Competition
Recently, students had the opportunity to enter the Young Writers ‘I Have a Dream’ poetry competition, which is open to secondary schools across the country. There were many strong entries, and we are delighted that 21 of our students have been selected for publication in the Young Writers anthology.
Well done to all students who took part – we are incredibly proud of your creativity and effort. We look forward to seeing even more fantastic work in the next competition!
Attenborough Adventure Day
To celebrate David Attenborough's 100th birthday, we enjoyed a fantastic Adventure Day at Aston Lodge. Throughout the day, pupils took part in a range of exciting outdoor and environmental activities, including nature hunts, litter picking, and creating fact files about David Attenborough and his incredible contribution to wildlife and conservation. The activities have encouraged children to learn more about the natural world and the importance of protecting our planet.
Roman Day in Y3
Earlier this month, Y3 had a visitor from Want2B Workshops to learn all about life in Roman times.
Throughout the day, pupils learnt how Roman soldiers dressed and marched into battle, as well as key Roman achievements. Pupils also took part in hands-on activities, including pretending to be Roman soldiers, playing knucklebones, creating mosaics, and building their own aqueducts.
Golden Ticket Winners
We are bursting with pride as some of our amazing students have been awarded a Golden Ticket and special prize from Rotherham United for their outstanding effort and dedication in PE and school sports.
From excellent teamwork to pushing themselves to acheive Personal Bests, they have truly gone above and beyond.
Y13 Celebrate the End of an Era
On the 7th May, we hosted a special garden party for our Y13 students, as they marked the end of their journey with Wickersley Sixth Form.
The event provided a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to come together ahead of the exam season, celebrating the friendships, achievements, and memories made throughout their time with us.
Good luck in your A-Levels, Y13!
What a busy term it’s been!
On behalf of Wickersley Partnership Trust, have a happy and restful break!
