October 2022

Welcome to our first WPT newsletter of the 22/23 academic year.

It's been a busy half term, with lots of new and exciting things happening across our schools. This newsletter will showcase just a some of the things that we've been getting up to over the last few weeks.

WPT Young Musician of the Year

On Thursday 13th October, we held our annual WPT Young Musician of the Year at Rawmarsh Community School.

18 finalists from schools across the Trust competed across five categories, each giving a live performance to an appreciative audience.

School Games' Tag Rugby Festival

On Friday 7th October, over 30 schools competed in the Rotherham School Games Tag Rugby Festival.

This was the first School Games tournament that all eight of our primary schools competed in together.

Rawmarsh Sandhill were victorious and have secured their place in the South Yorkshire competition next month.

WPT Director of Art Delivers CPD Sessions

Our WPT Director of Art, Jo Woods, recently delivered Art CPD sessions to our Trust Art teachers.

Artists, crafters and photographers created a ceramic clay piece of artwork inspired by their favourite artist.

Three Times National Taekwondo Champion

A few weeks ago one of our students, Zak, competed in the National Championships and came away with a gold medal and is now three times National Champion!

RCS Take Part in Restart a Heart Day

On Thursday 13th October, over 200 Y7 students were trained on how to do CPR by a group of staff, volunteers and partners from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Y11's Mountain Walking Weekend

A group of our Y11s recently took part in a mountain walking weekend in the Lake District. We camped at Basebrown Farm campsite in the stunning Langdale Valley. The students were part of our Silver DofE group who completed their qualifying expedition in the Peak District during the summer.

Community Environment Day

Some of our children took part in a community environmental day where we adopted a tree. They planted bulbs ready for spring, took part in an arts & crafts activity, and even received a gift!

Gold School Games Mark

We are so proud to announce that we have been awarded the Gold School Games Mark.

We are aiming for platinum next year!

Chestnut Class Fieldwork

Chestnut class had a great time walking around the area near the school and completing their fieldwork.

Hayley Takes Gold in Wheelchair Basketball Championships

Y10 student, Hayley, has been representing her team at various wheelchair basketball competitions throughout the county.

Hayley and her team took the gold medal in the Yorkshire National Championships!

Singing Success

Y10 student, Laura, undertook her Grade 5 Pop Vocal exam over the summer and was awarded a Distinction!

She also performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Rotherham Show and Rhythms of Rotherham!

McLaren Insight Day

On Friday 7th October, a group of female Y9 / Y10 Engineering students visited McLaren for an Insight Day.

Wickersley Sixth Form Open Evening

Y11s and parents / carers! You're invited to Wickersley Sixth Form on Thursday 17th November between 5pm and 8pm for our Open Evening.

This is a fantastic opportunity for prospective parents to have a look around our site and meet our staff and students.

With Me In Mind Ambassadors

Y6 students, Darcie and Jasmin, are this year's With Me In Mind Ambassadors!

They recently had their first official meeting with Gemma from the With Me In Mind Team.

FS1 Halloween Crafts

FS1 have enjoyed our Halloween craft sessions recently.

We made paper plate pumpkins, spooky biscuits, witches' hats, fluffy ghosts and skeletons!

Y6 Litter Pickers

Last week, Y6 spent some time cleaning up the school.

We have been very lucky to have been awarded a grant for our eco-school work, which we spent on new recycling bins, hi-vis vests and a class set of litter pickers.

Y6 Visit Crucial Crew

Our Y6 students have recently attended Crucial Crew.

We learnt many important life skills to keep us all safe!

Foods From Around the World

Our Geography theme ‘Foods from Around the World’ has taught us to use a range of maps, identified how land is used in our community, and also taken us to our local ASDA store in Dalton.

Identifying Foods

We recently took a trip to our local ASDA supermarket, identifying foods from our 'Foods From Around the World' Geography theme.

We then sorted out the foods into good groups and identified their nutrients.

Sponsored Walk 2022

Despite a few barriers to our Sponsored Walk this year, most of our secondary schools were able to go ahead with the event.

Although it was challenging, all students were in good spirits and everyone had an amazing day.

Awesome Autumn

What an amazing term FS1 are having so far!

We have recently had a special visit from Pops where we sang songs around the campfire and played games on the field.

Recently, our Y10 and Y11 students visited an Army base in York to learn about the different pathways and careers in the Army.

WOW Walk to School Challenge

This term we launched our WOW Walk to School Challenge to try and help the environment, our community and our health.

Y6 Artwork Showcase

Y6 showcased their pastel harvest artwork and read out prayers of thanks for the harvest on Friday afternoon – brilliant team spirit and caring attitudes on display!

National Poetry Day

Thursday 6th October was National Poetry Day. Y3 have been learning about different styles of poetry and have all written their own poem which they performed to their class.

Y10 Netball Team Make it to the Rotherham Schools Finals

This month, the Y10 Netball Team took part in the Rotherham Schools Netball Tournament at Wath Academy.

Well done to all of them for making it to the finals!

Y7 Science Work

This term our Y7 Scientists have been learning about animal and plant cells.

They have produced some amazing work!

MFL Trip to Barcelona

The Clifton MFL Department have recently been lucky enough to explore the wonders of Barcelona!

Students experienced Waterworld, Barcelona City Centre, Tossa de Mar and Portaventura!

High Tea with the CEO

On Tuesday 18th October, 11 students from across the school at Aston Hall J&I were selected by their teachers and Headteacher, Mr Holmes, to attend a ‘High tea with the CEO’ in recognition of their notable achievements recently in/out of school.

Gold School Games Mark

This week we had a visit from WPT's Sports Development Manager, Mr Walker, who delivered our School Games Gold Award!

World Mental Health Day

For this year's World Mental Health Day, our With Me In Mind Student Ambassadors certainly helped promote positive wellbeing throughout our school!

Y2 Visit Conisbrough Castle

The Y2 children had a lovely day visiting Conisbrough Castle where they loved finding out lots of facts about the castle, sketching the castle, and going to the top of the keep!

Y6 Learn New Skills at Crucial Crew

This week, Y6 had a brilliant day at Crucial Crew. They learned many valuable life skills such as road safety and fire safety, as well as taking part in a mock trial.

Y4 Outdoor Learning

Class 11 were given the opportunity to go into the woods and discover all about the Romans.

We looked at how they shaped our modern world and how they came to settle in our local area of Rotherham.

Anti-Bullying Ambassadors

Miss Moss has recently been appointed as our new Anti-Bullying Strategic Lead.

She will be working with the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors to support students and their families.

A Visit From PC Gayle

PC Gayle recently joined us for lunch to talk to students about behaviour and the wider community.

PC Gayle will be offering support through proactive mentoring and support as well as by following on incidents reported to the police.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Last month we held our very own TGA Bake Off as part of the Macmillan Coffee Morning.

We are extremely proud that we raised £271 for this worthy charity.

The Ashwood Way

In PSHE this term we have been looking at why we have The Ashwood Way and how it impacts us and our school.

We have discussed the roles of each person within the team and what makes good teamwork.

Local Farmer, Robbie, Visits Ashwood

We recently had a very special visitor to our school. Local Farmer, Robbie, came in to talk to the children about life on the farm.

All the children were very respectful and definitely followed The Ashwood Way!

Y6 School Council Candidates

At the start of term, we held our School Council elections. Y6 had a wonderful afternoon of interviewing potential candidates for the role of School Councillor

We were all very impressed with their manifestos, as well as their public speaking.
