February 2025
Welcome to the latest edition of the WPT Newsletter.
Since returning from the festive break, students and staff from across the Trust have been getting up to, and achieving, some wonderful things.
Take a look below!
Foundation are excited to announce that we have a new class pet, Sam the hamster! The children have been looking through non-fiction books, in order to find information on how we can best take care of Sam.
In History, Class 4 have been looking at sources of evidence from the Industrial Revolution, and decided whether they were primary or secondary sources, then explained their decisions. They also learned about the jobs that children were expected to do during this time period.
Great work, well done!
Class 2 have been enjoying a variety of books from different authors recently. They have looked at non-fiction and fiction books, and identified the features of texts. The children have discussed their favourite stories and named the title, author, and illustrator.
Fantastic work!
On Thursday 16th January, Wickersley welcomed back the Class of 2024 for their GCSE and A Level Presentation Evening.
The students who received their official results last summer were invited back to school, alongside family and friends, to celebrate their achievements across their final year at WSSC.
Wickersley School hosted a spectacular music showcase on Tuesday 14th January, featuring over 40 talented students from across the school, ranging from Year 7 to Sixth Form.
The event included an impressive array of performances, with soloists—both vocalists and instrumentalists—taking to the stage, along with two rock bands, duets, a quartet of drummers, the Wickersley Singers, and the school band. Most of these groups have only been together for a year, with several new members joining in September. The students delivered exceptional performances, and the evening was a resounding success, expertly hosted by two Sixth Form students to a full audience.
We are delighted to share that our recent SEND Coffee Morning at Wickersley was a great success! This termly event provided a fantastic opportunity for parents and carers to connect, share experiences, and access valuable support.
We were pleased to welcome representatives from external agencies, including the Specialist Inclusion Team, Aspire Outreach, Early Help, Rotherham Parent Carer Forum, and SENDIAS, who offered guidance and resources to families.
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such a positive, and informative session. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future!
At Wickersley Partnership Trust (WPT), we have a whole-Trust approach to mental health and wellbeing. For #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek last week, our students took part in some workshops, delivered by With Me In Mind (WMIM).
WMIM is an agency that we work closely with throughout the year so that all of our students have access to mental health support and workshops that cover topics such as emotional regulation, strategies to deal with worry, and talking about feelings.
Our schools also assign WMIM Mental Health Ambassadors who do a great job in helping us promote a positive wellbeing across our schools, share ideas on how our schools can work together with the WMIM team and attend events.
Click the button below to take a look at just some of the WMIM workshops that our students got involved in during the week.
We would like to say a massive well done to Maizie in Y8, who has recently achieved a Distinction in her Grade 1 Piano exam. You should be extremely proud of yourself.
Over the last term, Y9 students have been working with local artists at Flux Rotherham to create a unique and thrilling movie for the Otherham Winter Light Festival.
The students have taken part in workshops with the artists, creating imaginative masks, which were then filmed using creative lighting and filming. Their work will be projected onto the buildings in Rotherham Town Centre!
Well done to all staff and students who were involved!
In the Autumn Term, form groups nominated a representative to ensure every student’s voice could be heard, reflecting the British values of democracy and mutual respect.
These representatives attend the relevant Key Stage Student Council meetings held every half term. Following these discussions, both the KS3 and KS4 student council teams shared their ideas and suggestions with the Senior Leadership Team and did a fantastic job of sharing their peers’ ideas and confidently pitching these suggestions.
Agreed actions have been shared with the full staff body in the form of a ‘you said, we did’ form time – well done Student Councillors!
In 2024, to celebrate WPT turning 10, we launched WPT School Report. Following on from last year's success, we're making it an annual project, and it launched this half term.
All the students taking part have met, been put into their teams, assigned their roles and picked their topics.
We're ready to go with the next rounds, which will be taking place in March.
Thank you to everyone who has helped make the project a success so far!
A few weeks ago, Rebecca from Unique Solutions came to Brinsworth, to present this Y6 superstar with his prize for winning their art competition.
His wonderful work is displayed in their calendar, and he also won art supplies for school.
Well done, you should be extremely proud of yourself!
Our ‘With Me In Mind’ School Ambassadors for this year are Lewis and Antonia! Our WMIM Ambassadors help promote a positive wellbeing throughout our school, share ideas on how our school can work together with the WMIM team to support students, and attend WMIM events.
Here is what they had to say: ‘We are looking forward to spreading kindness throughout school, and believe we can help to provide students with opportunities that will benefit them, and their wellbeing. We are always available on the yard if anybody needs us, or would like some help.’
Well done Lewis and Antonia, you are absolute superstars!
The children at Brinsworth Whitehill had a fantastic time with Rocksteady, during assembly.
Some of the children were selected to play in the band, and did an absolutely amazing job. We were also super impressed with the other children singing along with Tim, and encouraging one another.
Some of our future rockstars have already signed up to be in a band of their own.
Attendance Manager at The Gainsborough Academy, Mr Wilby, has recently competed at the A/BPU Powerlifting Competition, and we're proud that he came 1st in his category.
He has now been invited to represent Great Britain at the A/WPC in Wroclaw, Poland in June and the Powerlifting Games at the NEC Birmingham in November.
Well done, Mr Wilby!
Students from Clifton Community School and Wickersley School and Sports College were invited by Rotherham Council to take part in the Holocaust Memorial Service that was held at Clifton Park.
The RE Ambassadors got to work on choosing a poem that would be suitable to share at the event. They chose to read Belsen Silence, a poem that was written by Iolo Lewis who served in the British 11th Armoured Division, which liberated the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in April 1945.
During the event, students from surrounding schools performed and faith leaders shared prayers and verses of their holy scriptures to share the importance of peace in the world.
Well done to the Clifton and Wickersley students for being so respectful – you did your schools and the Trust proud.
In Y6, the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the artist, Valerie Ganz. They have started experimenting with charcoal, using images from the miner’s strike as a stimulus for their art work. They have all done such a fantastic job, and should be very proud of themselves.
Well done Y6!
A few weeks ago, the children in FS2 learned all about the Chinese New Year. They learned that 2025 is the year of the snake, and enjoyed learning what animal year that they were born in.
They took part in some arts and crafts, then had the opportunity to taste some Chinese food.
Great work, FS2!
This half term, Holly Class had a fantastic time taking part in the Unbeatable Energy Workshop, 'Rubbish Rhythms'! This was an amazing session, where the children used items such as water bottles, and old pipes as instruments!
Everyone really enjoyed experimenting with different ways to channel sound. Well done, Y4/5!
Students from Y1 - Y6 were surprised with a performance of the pantomime, Snow White, this half term! The children had a fantastic afternoon watching the professionals on the stage, and some of the staff made an appearance too!
The younger children enjoyed an afternoon of films in their classroom.
Well done to all students who represented Sandhill brilliantly!
Y4 have started their new topic in Maths - Length and Perimeter. The children practiced by using cm and mm to measure the length of objects around the classroom, before putting these skills into their work.
Fantastic work, Y4!

As part of the RE curriculum, Y8 students had the opportunity to visit a local Gurdwara in Sheffield. The students were able to look around the Sikh temple, and were given an educational talk about the Gurdwara and the Sikh religion, and were given the opportunity to ask questions to further develop their understanding of Sikhism. Whilst at the Gurdwara, the students also visited the Langar Hall (community kitchen), where food was kindly provided for the students to enjoy.
It was wonderful seeing the students' engagement and enthusiasm, and we are extremely proud of how well they represented Clifton!
On Wednesday 29th January, Y9 and Y10 Dance students visited the Sheffield Lyceum Theatre, to watch Chicago the Musical, starring Strictly Come Dancing’s Kevin Clifton, Coronation Street’s Faye Brookes, and Loose Women’s Brenda Edwards.
The dancers were lucky enough to interview Kevin Clifton after the performance, and got an insight on how professionals work in the performing arts industry. It was a very enjoyable afternoon, with members of the audience commenting on how well our students behaved.
A few weeks ago, Clifton students took part in the annual Mock Interview event. Many students came to the interviews feeling nervous, and left with huge smiles on their faces, and a confidence boost. The feedback from the visitors was superb, and they were incredibly impressed with the student behaviour throughout.
Well done to everyone who took part - you represented Clifton fantastically, and should be extremely proud of yourselves.
At The Gainsborough Academy, we aim for all of our students to leave able and qualified. As part of this commitment, all of our students take part in First Aid lessons every year.
This half term, KS4 students learnt CPR and how to use a defibrillator.
Great work!
Over the last few weeks, our students have been busy at our allotment site, getting the beds ready for planting! We're looking forward to sampling all the delicious produce they grow later in the year.
Well done!
On Saturday 1st February, TGA student, Cody, competed at the Kixstars Open in Crawley. Cody's weight category was the most competitive weight class on the day, and some amazing players from all over the country were in attendance.
Cody got drawn on the hardest side of the draw, but that did not faze him - he did not lose one single round all day, even against top opposition!
Amazing work, Cody!
We've continued with our Proud to be TGA initiative this half term. We want our students to be Proud of the work they accomplish and of the school they belong to. Our Proud Podium, Proud phone calls home, and Proud Plenaries are just some of the ways we have been accomplishing this.
Proud to be TGA.
Recently, the Thrybergh Primary School children had a musical themed afternoon! They started learning about notes and drum beats in their music lesson, and then the children took part in the Unbeatable Energy session, 'Rubbish Rhythms'.

They also took part in a brilliant workshop about materials, where they were able to learn about reversible and irreversible changes, and how different materials react.
Everyone had a fantastic time and showed the Thrybergh Way in everything they did.
Recently in Foundation, the children have been reading the story book ‘The Gingerbread Man’. As part of their learning, they have each designed, made, and decorated their very own gingerbread man. Foundation have had lots of fun in the process, and thoroughly enjoyed eating their creations after all the hard work.
Well done everyone!

Well done, Y4!
On Saturday 25th January, over 160 people from the Aston Hall school community enjoyed an evening of entertainment supporting the Sheffield Steelers at the Sheffield Arena.
It’s the second of three visits this season to the arena, with more and more families engaging in these events each time. For many families, it’s the first time they’ve experienced such a sporting event, and enjoyed supporting a local sporting organisation.
The children and staff enjoyed watching the Steelers win 4-2 against the Manchester Storm, with lots of cheering, dancing, and fun with friends!
Aston Hall are extremely proud of Sienna in Y4, who recently competed in Karate at the WTKA British Open. She was entered into the intermediate / advanced categories with lots of older children and even competed against World Champions and black belts from the UK, and Italy! She performed in five categories, including traditional Shotokan, weapons and musical.
Well done Sienna, what a superstar!
Recently, Y9 Drama students visited Leeds Playhouse to see the critically acclaimed production of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. The production was an incredible spectacle that included puppetry, live music, and creatively designed costumes and scenery to portray the world of Narnia.
Over the next half term, students will be exploring the production’s use of design, and with such a superb piece of theatre, they’ll have plenty to talk about!
Many of our Y8 students had the exciting opportunity to visit the local Gurdwara in Sheffield. Students were able to see an Eastern faith in action, and experience the spiritual atmosphere of the Gurdwara! The students received an informative and educational talk about the Sikh Temple and religion. Students were also invited into the Langar (community kitchen), where food was kindly provided for them to enjoy!
During the second part of the trip, students took part in some fieldwork - they were asked to study the environment alongside the Sheffield Canal.

A few Y9 students at Thrybergh Academy have been involved in creating a film with the organisation, Flux Rotherham, as part of the 'Otherham Winter Light Festival'.
Y5 had a fantastic time on their trip to Rawmarsh Library! The children designed their own carnival masks and worked in teams to answer quiz questions about South America, which is their current topic in Geography.
Well done everyone!
One of the Ashwood Ways is 'We Dream Big' and as part of the WPT Careers Curriculum, some of our students recently got the chance to do a Q&A session with Headteacher, Miss Roper, to discuss her career path in education such as how she became a teacher, and her experience in the role.
Click the button below to read what they found out!
Recently, children across Ashwood Primary School have been enjoying after school arts and crafts sessions. They have been learning about pattern and design, making their own creations, and taking inspiration from the Chinese New Year.
All Y13 Physics students took part in the Physics Challenge from the British Physics Olympiad. This paper is designed to stretch thinking into the applications and ideas, rather than to keep to the narrow content of the syllabus, preparing students for further work, or for interview practice.
A smaller group of the Y13 Physics students also asked to be entered into the Astro Challenge. This paper is a mix of questions on astronomy and physics, that allows students to analyse data through to a conclusion, including concepts seen in physics being applied to astrophysical contexts.
