WPT Newsletter

February 2023

Welcome to our third WPT newsletter of the 22/23 academic year.

It's been a busy half term, with lots of new and exciting things happening across our schools. This newsletter will showcase just a some of the things that we've been getting up to over the last few weeks.

Netball National Schools Regional

Wickersley Sixth-Form Netball Team played in the National Schools regional round on Sunday 29th January at the EIS.

Annual Movement Festival

Our Annual Movement Festival took place on the 6th-9th February. 

There were some fantastic displays from the students involved and the festival was a huge success.

New School Council

The newly-elected school council consists of two students from each year group, which also includes two students from sixth form.

The new team makes a good first impression as they strive to make positive changes within the school.

A Visit from Peter Murray

Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed the visit from local author, Peter J Murray, to talk about his series of children's books based on the character of 'Mokee Joe'.

Children's Mental Health Week

We started Children's Mental Health Week with a rainbow-themed task. 

Items from around the school were used to make our own rainbow - what a great challenge 🌈

Chinese New Year

FS1 and FS2 learnt about Chinese New Year and the Year of the Rabbit - including food tastings! 


Synchronised Skating Triumph

Just before Christmas, Tilly's team travelled to Dumfries to compete in the Trophy D'eccossee & secured a bronze medal!

Pledge Awards

The Rawmarsh Pledges sets high expectations for our students and demands personal accountability.

Congratulations to all the students who acheived a pledge this last term!

Y9 Childcare

Our Y9 Childcare groups have started their 'Caring for the Child' unit this term.

The first lesson included the different types of nappies and how to put a nappy on a doll!

Weaving Wonders

Butterflies and Ladybirds have been learning about the artist, Anna Ray.

We practiced weaving ribbon and finding different materials which were suitable for weaving.

Flying Back in Time ✈

Chestnut Class have learnt all about the impact of flight, and how they can travel further and faster.

They compared rail and flight travel maps to see how thye could travel across the world.

Sparta V Athens

Willow Class have been studying Ancient Greece in History.

The class debated which city they would like to live in after learning about their ways of life.

WPT Media Officer's Design Success

Between July and November of 2022, WPT Media and Design Officer, April, took part in D&AD Shift London – a free, industry-led night school program pioneering in creative excellence in design and advertising.   

WPT Central Team moves Office

Our Central Team has moved location! 

We said goodbye to Cranworth Road and have moved to Swanage Court at Bradmarsh Business Park.

WPT Uniform Bank - Tesco Community Grant

Our WPT Uniform Bank has been shortlisted for in-store voting as part of Tesco Community Grants. 

The Uniform Bank supports families across all 13 of our schools by providing quality new and used items for those that struggle with the costs of school uniform and essentials. 

Meeting a Marine Scientist 

We met a Marine Scientist online and learnt how we can make a career out of something that we're really passionate about.

Sports Equipment Challenge

Professional swimmer, Amy Smith, worked with all classes to help raise money for sports equipment. 

She also told us all about her personal success story.

Books & Biscuits

Every Friday morning, we're inviting parents/carers to read with their child(ren) in school.

A big thank you to everyone who have popped along so far; it's been great for all involved!

Y10 Futsal Competition ⚽

Our Y10 Boys Football team took part in the Rotherham Schools Futsal Competition.

There was some strong competition and we finished 3rd.

Well done, boys - you were a credit to Clifton!

Pledge Awards

Students from Y9, Y10 & Y11 have received their Bronze Awards for their Active Citizenship Pledges.

Keep up the good work!

Y7 & Y8 STEM Workshop

Y7 & 8 students were delivered a STEM workshop by BAE Systems and and the RAF. 

The workshops looked at how vehicles and people adapt to extreme environments, students learnt about space & took part in communication tasks. 

Sensational Sewing

Class 4 have been improving their sewing skills and completing a small bag.

They designed the bags themselves - don't they look great?

Forest Fridays 🌲

Friday is our new Forest School day!

The children have been exploring habitats linked to their science work.

Time to Talk Day 🗣

Time to Talk Day is the nation's biggest mental health conversation.

The Gainsborough Academy took the opportunity to talk about and develop the skills to help manage their mental health. 

Translation Challenge

Well done to Lily-Mae who won Mr Miller's £5 translation challenge!

Students translated a long piece of French or Spanish, as they discussed their choice of language for Y9 and beyond.

Onatti Productions

Onatti Productions returned to The Gainsborough Academy to perform a Spanish play to Y9/10.

The play was performed totally in Spanish and students got involved in the production.

Basketball Skills 🏀

Class 2/3 have been learning basketball this half term.

The students have been so enthusiastic in trying a new sport.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

The Foundation Stage Children enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year this term.

Ukulele Lessons

This term, Class 4/5 have been enjoying learning how to play the ukulele!

They have learnt some basic chords and simple songs 🎼

Aston Hall take on the School Games

Some of our Year 5 & 6 students represented Aston Hall at the School Games indoor athletics competition. 

We're so proud of the children that took part!

Mastering Penmanship

Children in Y3/4PB have been working hard on their handwriting.

Lunar New Year

Children in FS2L enjoyed lots of themed activities to learn about Lunar New Year, including: card writing, building dragons and cooking Chinese food in the role play area. 

Science Careers Month Visit

As part of Science Careers Month, we were lucky to have a scientist from Jessop's Hospital, Sheffield, to visit us.

A Senior Clinical Embryologist spoke to Y1-Y6 about her passion for science and her career.

Y2's Seaside Trip

Y2 had a trip to Scarborough, where they dressed as Victorians, enjoyed an ice cream and played on the beach!

Everyone behaved so well and we had a wonderful day!

Fun with Pops!

Class 6 have had a lot of fun in the woods with Pops.

We collected natural materials to create our own natural pictures.

Certificates & Awards Presentation Evening

Our Class of 2022 returned to Thrybergh Academy for their Certificates & Awards Evening. 

Accompanied by parents & carers, they collected their GCSE certificates & picked up a series of individual awards celebrating their personal attributes & achievements across the curriculum.

Grand Opening of Multi-Use Games Arena

We opened our Multi-Use Games Arena, with the help of local marathon runner, Ray Matthews.

Team Ashwood take on the School Games

Y5 and Y6 joined other Rotherham schools to take place in the indoor athletics event.

Morning with Sile Sibanda

Y4 worked alongside poet and presenter, Sile Sibanda, discovering the world of poerty and generating new ideas.
