December 2024
Welcome to yet another edition of our WPT Newsletter!
As we prepare to break for the festive season, we reflect on some of the fun and exciting things that we have done and achieved across the Trust over the last few weeks.
Take a look at what our students and staff have been getting up to!
To acknowledge and celebrate the loyalty and dedication of our colleagues within the Trust, we have officially launched our Long Service Award scheme.
Both our support staff and teaching staff work incredibly hard day in, day out, to improve the education and outcomes of our young people and wider Trust community. We wouldn't be able to fulfil our mantra 'to send all young people into an ever-changing world, able and qualified to play their full part in it' without the commitment of our entire workforce.
We're tremendously proud that our WPT workforce is made up of a diverse team (with some having served their schools for over 30 years!), and we would like to honour those who have committed so much of their professional life to WPT, our schools, our students, and our local community.
Our first batch of Long Service Awards have been handed out to all staff members with over 5 years of service, and we look forward to continuing to reward our long-standing colleagues going forward.
2024 marked a decade since Wickersley School and Sports College academised and Wickersley Partnership Trust (WPT) was formed. This milestone year has been one of celebration, culminating in our biggest cross-Trust collaboration ever - the WPT is 10 Showcase!
On Tuesday 12th November, over 300 students from across WPT to the stage at Magna Science Adventure Centre to play their part in the celebrations.
The event had three showings throughout the day, with performances of:

Tema Popular De Brasil – Wickersley School and Sports College guitar duet
SIX The Musical – Rawmarsh Community School production
Cinderella – Thrybergh Academy pantomime
Bohemian Rhapsody – Brinsworth Whitehill Primary School KS2 soloist
The Greatest Showman – WPT Young Voices Choir
As well as the on-stage performances, attendees were treated to a WPT Art Gallery; a display of Design Technology talents; the history of WPT; an assortment of WPT Alumni and a display of the WPT School Report.
A huge thank you goes out to the following:

And, of course, thank you to everyone who attended one of the showings. We hope you thoroughly enjoyed the WPT is 10 Showcase!
Last month, Foljambe Primary School turned 70! The school first opened its doors back in 1954, and to celebrate its 70th anniversary, students were given an assembly on the history of Foljambe, with Mrs Lawery showing them some of the original documents from its grand opening.
The day was celebrated further with a whole school photo, balloons, bunting and buns!
Back in November, Class 3 had a wonderful visit to Creswell Crags to continue their study of the Stone Ages, as part of the History curriculum that we offer at Foljambe.
Everyone had such an amazing day and the children followed the Foljambe Way perfectly. Well done, Class 3!
The Class 4 children have recently been asking the question 'why does Nigeria have a strong economy, yet so much poverty?'. They have been looking at the evidence for why there are rich and poor areas in Nigeria, and the cause of this.
Great work, well done everyone!
And just like that, our Panto is over!
Thank you to all our audiences who cheered and booed as the story of the Princess and the Frog and the Twelve Days of Christmas unfolded with magic, music, and mayhem in this years Wickersley Pantomime!
This year’s show may be over, but work has already started on our Christmas-iest panto of them all – we’ll see you for Beauty and the Beast next year!
On Friday 29th November, Y11 students Lucie and Beth attended the Community Achievement Awards at the New York Stadium. They were nominated along with a friend in the Young Volunteer Award and were 2 of 3 finalists.
They had been nominated for their role in setting up and running the female academy at Bramley Sunnyside Junior Football Club.
We are so pleased to announce that they won! Well done girls - you should be extremely proud of yourselves.
Y10 student, Ruby, has successfully auditioned for Rotherham's Got Talent and received a Golden Buzzer from judge Josh!
She delivered a breathtaking performance that left everyone in awe. Her incredible talent and stage presence truly stole the show!
Well done Ruby - we're really proud of you!
Earlier this month our extremely talented choir performed in a small Christmas concert at Wentworth Woodhouse, organised by Rotherham Music Service. They got to sing in a lovely festive setting with a number of other schools from across Rotherham.
They were outstanding - well done girls!
Craft Club and LSA students from Rawmarsh created a beautiful Remembrance display, making clay and recycled poppies that they moulded and decorated themselves. LSA students have also written poems, remembering those who serviced in the war.
A group of Y9 students attended the annual North Star Science School at Gulliver's Valley.
Students took part in a variety of hands-on workshops, inspiring students to be the UK's next generation of young scientists.
Hundreds of students from around South Yorkshrie gathered to listen to Professor Brian Cox talk about the universe, black holes, and the possiblity of one day finding life on another planet.
Great work, well done Y9!
On 16th January 2025 (9am - 3.30pm), Yorkshire Sport Foundation - in partnership with Moving Rotherham and School Games - is holding the Rotherham PE Conference at AESSEAL New York Stadium, Rotherham.
Only 47% of children are meeting the CMO's guidelines of 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and significant inequalities remain. So what challenges do PE Leaders face in closing this gap?
This conference will focus on strategies to help schools identify and support students through curriculum PE, extra-curricular sports and broader physical activity initiatives.
Open to: Headteachers | Governors | PE Leaders | PSHE Leaders | SENDCos | Wider school staff who support or deliver PE, Sport and physical activitity in schools.
We are extremely proud that our school has been accredited with the Rotherham Charter Gold status from Genuine Partnerships and Rotherham Charter for the third time.
Since 2015 we have been working extremely hard to provide an exceptional SEN offer, and a safe space for us to work in close partnership with children and their families.
Since our last re-accreditation in 2021, we have achieved some wonderful things together including phase-opening our brand new alternative provision, The Orchard, and becoming an asthma-friendly school.
England Women's football team (AKA The Lionesses!) played at Bramall Lane a couple of weeks ago, and one of our Y3 superstars was chosen by Sheffield Children's Hospital to be a mascot!
We are all extremely proud of her for this fantastic achievement - well done!
On Thursday 12th December, Barnsley Brass entertained the children and staff at Brinsworth Whitehill during our annual Christmas Sing-Along! Everyone had an amazing time, and it really got us into the festive spirit!
The children were fantastic and behaved brilliantly!
Earlier in December, we held our WPT Y11 Careers Fair at our Cranworth Road site, for Rotherham students across the Trust to come down and get a taste of the Post-16 and career options available to them after they leave school.
It was a packed-out exhibition with a range of providers there - colleges, universities, the armed forces, public sector organisations and private sector companies.
We also had our own WPT stand to showcase the variety of careers we have available across the Trust, outside of teaching roles.
Ms Jones, WPT Careers Advisor, said: "Our Y11 students had access to range of over 45 industries. Students had meaningful discussions with a wide range of professions, which was a great opportunity for them to practice their social skills, and improve confidence and self esteem."
Our fourth annual Staff Awards took place at Magna Science Adventure Centre last month and what a night it was!
WPT colleagues, Directors, Governors and Members from across the Trust came together to celebrate the hard work, commitment and dedication that they put in every single day to ensure the best possible education and outcomes for our students.
42 awards were given out - the most awards we've ever handed out so far!
Putting on such an event would not be possible without the generous support and donations from our corporate sponsors. A huge thank you goes out to:
Pioneer Construction Services | MAC Construction Consultants | Everlea Landscapes | Garvels Ltd | First Aid Schools | Carly Wilson Estates | Pro16Plus | Genfit | The Travel Diamond
Once again, congratulations to all of our award winners this year - your hard work does not go unnoticed.
We recently took Year 8 students from across the trust on a trip to Magna!
Here they attended a workshop to engage and prepare them for their next topic on 'Matter'.
They helped demonstrate lots of different practical activities they wouldn't usually do in school. They investigated the properties of solids, liquids and gases, before exploring the museum and applying what they'd learnt to different scenarios.
All staff and students loved dressing up in their pyjamas to raise funds for Children In Need!
They even completed the 11am Wake Up Shake Up activity live!
Students also shared the importance of supporting children who may not be as fortunate as them.
As part of the introduction to the topic on the Vikings, Hazel Class visited the Dig and Viking Centre to learn all about how the Vikings used to live. They also explored life as an archaeologist!
Everyone had such a great day, and represented the school brilliantly.
On Wednesday 11th December, our school enjoyed a delicious Christmas Dinner, and dressed in our most festive outfits!
All of the children remembered their manners and had an amazing time. Well done everyone!
On Wednesday 4th December, all children were invited to wear a Christmas jumper to school for Christmas Dinner in the hall. The day started with the Sandhill tradition of Y6 decorating the Christmas tree - they did a fantastic job!
The children then came to eat a delicious Christmas Dinner with Christmas-themed puddings prepared by our amazing kitchen team, who all earned a Headteacher's sticker for their hard work!
Sandhill started the festive season celebrations with an after school Winter Party. This was held in the main hall with all year groups, and FS1 were invited for the first time!
The children dressed up in their winter finery, danced, played games and ate hot dogs. We had so much fun!
Our children recently had the opportunity to take lessons with the Royal Ballet and Opera, featuring Swan Lake and the Barber of Seville.
They watched live performers, and were encouraged to take part themselves whilst also learning about the prop, costume, scenery and lighting departments.
The sessions were a real success, and gave our students a great insight into the arts!
Congratulations to Kobi, Mia and Sophia for winning the recent Drama Department Theatre Poster Design Competition!
The winners each received a book from The Demon Headmaster series for their poster design, which was a theatrical production version of the play that they have been studying in lessons.
Our Student Council have continued working with Rotherham Council's Transport Planning and Policy team in the redevelopment of Middle Lane.
Their task was to create a community newsletter to suggest ways to make the area safer, encourage people to travel in healthier ways, and get parents to park safely when picking up or dropping off students.
Well done everyone!
This year's Christmas pantomime was Snow White, and all staff and students involved in the production have been working extremely hard for many months to bring a magnificent performance to our school and local community!
Congratulations to all those who took part in Snow White and a huge thank you to everyone who came along and supported our students.
Several of our WPT primary schools got into the festive spirit during their Carol Concert service. They were able to experience a live brass ensemble, performed by the wonderful WPT Music staff, as the children sang alongside them.
All the children have worked incredibly hard to learn all the songs, and everyone had a fantastic time.
Well done to all those involved!
On Wednesday 4th December, as part of our Wellbeing Wednesday initiative, staff from the Trust were invited to take part in the WPT Wreath Making to create their own wreath for the festive season!
Over 230 colleagues from our 13 schools and Central Team took part - making this our most attended wellbeing event so far.
All the staff who took part had a fabulously festive time, and all the wreaths are sure to bring some Christmas cheer!
In October our wellbeing activity was Pumpkin Carving! Each staff member who took part had to carve their very own pumpkin. But there was a catch!
The person who carved the best would win a special prize (a personalised trophy!).
There was some tough competition, but we can now reveal the winner...
Congratulations to Lauren Charlton, our WPT Director of Art for carving the best pumpkin! 🎃
Our incredibly talented students performed Elf Jr The Musical for their Christmas Show this year, and what a performance it was!
We'd like to congratulate all our students and staff members who were involved in the production - you were amazing!
Huge thank you to everyone who came to see one of the shows. Your support is always appreciated!
Boss (Behaviour Outreach Support Service) Lincoln, West Lindsey and North Kesteven Team have donated to 18 families at TGA this Christmas. Generous donations were gratefully received from local businesses, organisations, and individuals to support over 500 children this year!
The BOSS Caseworks have been working hard behind the scenes since January 2024 to ensure they could support so many children this year.
Thank you!
We couldn't be prouder of our fantastic students who represented our school at the recent cross-country event! Your hard work, determination and team spirit shone through.
A special shoutout to the three outstanding runners who have qualified to represent at Burleigh House - what an amazing achievement!
Our PE Department is absolutely beaming with pride!
We've continued with our Proud to be TGA initiative this half term. We want our students to be Proud of the work they accomplish and of the school they belong to. Our Proud Podium, Proud phone calls home, and Proud Plenaries are just some of the ways we have been accomplishing this.
Proud to be TGA.
We have been in high festive spirits at Thrybergh Primary School as we did our Reindeer Run to raise funds for Rotherham Hospice. It was raining but we didn't let that stop us!
We estimate that we have raised over £1000! We are so proud of the children for caring about other people, and we want to thank all the families for supporting this worthy charity.
Our Y3 students took part in a With Me In Mind workshop on cyberbullying this term. The children learnt so much, and now know about the harm that cyberbullying can cause.
They listened brilliantly throughout and were very respectful!
Well done, Y3!
Over the past few weeks, Foundation have been busy learning about the celebration of Christmas. They have taken part in many fun learning activities including: raising money for Rotherham Hospice on Christmas Jumper Day, Reindeer Dash, and a Christmas Concert.
The children earned a well-deserved hot chocolate and cookie treat as a reward for collaboratively achieving over 1000 dojos!
Well done, everyone!
Y6 were recently joined by Zoe from The National Holocaust Museum. The children followed the journey of Leo, a 10-year old Jewish boy who lived with this parents and a 2-year old sister, Hannah.
Zoe brought in artefacts from the museum to help describe parts of Leo's life and we got to watch videos from Leo's point of view, and recounts from people who lived during this time.
The children participated excellently throughout and learned a lot.
This term, we had the privilege of joining a virtual author visit by the wonderful Jacqueline Wilson, the author of many children's books, including Tracy Beaker, which has also been adapted into a popular TV programme.
We listened to her talk about getting into writing at a young age, and being supported by her teachers.
She has now written over 120 books! She told us that she actually writes most of her stories sitting in bed, surrounded by her cats and dogs - who she has included in some of her books!
What a fantastic talk, and well done to Class 16 for listening so brilliantly!
Y2 student, Ronnie, started playing pool for South Yorkshire under 18s one year ago and has since played in many tournaments. He recently attended the National Finals in a three-day event, and England scouts attended, seeing out future talent.
Ronnie - you have made your school extremely proud!
A couple of weeks ago we held our annual Christmas Fayre! The stalls included games, Santa keys, chocolate, cupcakes, and a special visit from Santa and his elf.
It was an amazing turnout from the parents and children, and we managed to raise over £1800 for the school!
A huge thank you to staff and volunteers for helping on the stalls, and to parents and carers for attending!
Well done to the Aston Hall students who recently put in some amazing performances against the other schools in the recent Rotherham School Games' Girls and Boys 7-a-side Hockey Competitions.
They played extremely well as a team and showed great sportsmanship throughout. After a great start, undefeated in their first five games only conceding three goals, they had a few tough losses in the final few games and just missed out on qualifying for the South Yorkshire Finals.
Well done, everyone!
Our FS2 children had a very exciting visit to the Sheffield Emergency Services Museum - their first ever school trip!
They were all amazingly well-behaved, and were fascinated by all of the emergency service vehicles from the past.
They also learnt all about what do to do in lots of different emergency scenarios!
That's a wrap! Thank you to everyone who came to see Cinderella at Thrybergh Academy. It's been a fantastic success, and our first sell-out panto!
Also a huge congratulations goes out to our cast, who have worked incredibly hard over the past three months, and thank you to parents/carers who have supported them throughout.
If you came and enjoyed the show, please spread the word - we would love for Thrybergh Panto to grow more and more each year!
Thrybergh's School Council recently took part in a community litter pick!
They all loved getting involved and helping out their local area. The students worked really hard while litter picking, and we thought they deserved a hot chocolate treat when they were finished.
Well done, School Council - you should be very proud of yourselves!
Y11 student, Louis, has recently completed his Pearson BTEC Level 2 Award in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community, for the South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Cadets.
Congratulations, Louis!
The children at Ashwood Primary School really enjoyed their Chrsitmas Dinner! They all got into the festive spirit, eating their delicious roast dinners while wearing their best Christmas jumpers.
They even joined in on some fun Christmas singing - well done, everyone!
As part of FS2's learning around 'people who help us in our community', Police Officers came to visit! They talked about keeping people safe, and how they help grown ups and children in the Rawmarsh community. They then showed the children different parts of their uniform, and even allowed them to have a go at wearing it!
They also showed FS2 different radios from over the years, to show how the technology has changed and improved.
Amazing work, FS2!
Y5 have been enjoying learning about the game of Korfball with the Sheffield University Korfball Team!
Korfball has similarities to netball, basketball and handball, whereby a team of four female players and four male players try to shoot a ball into the korf (basket).
The children loved playing this. Well done, Y5!
