Autumn 25
We are the new and improved Thrybergh Academy Student Council. We run differently to the previous council. We make use of committees and separate ourselves into five different focused groups. Each half term another committee is chosen as the focus and two people from that committee in each WPT school meet and have a large meeting where we discuss issues we’ve raised and solutions to others. We are creating this newsletter to share with you what we have done and our plans for the future to improve our school. We have a President and Vice President, who were democratically elected in a school wide vote.
Last half term, the focus was Quality of Education. The committee met many times and spoke about learning in our school. Noah and Sophie then represented Thrybergh Academy at the Trust Student Council meeting with the Primary and Secondary schools from the trust and the CEO. We shared our thoughts about learning and talked about what the student at Thrybergh would like to see in our school. Noah and Sophie, along with the President and Vice President, met with Mr May and Mr Hardcastle to share ideas from the meeting and set out the student councils key priorities for our school.
In the first half term of this school year, we held a student voice with some of our younger students in school, the general consensus was that we need more creative and imaginative lessons, this is a comment we have discussed within Quality of Education meetings. We have listened to how the students feel about their lessons and learning in general and have fed back to staff to help them adapt their lessons. We want everyone in school to want to learn and feel like they can!
We are going to work on better ways for students to speak to us, after Christmas we will have lesson drop ins and a suggestion box so that students can share their ideas.
Last half term, our student council focus was Environment.
Our committee has been meeting regularly to discuss our school environment and we have decided to concentrate on the environment outside after break time. We know our school environment is important and we want others in school to respect the environment as much as we do. Based on our ideas, a walk of the school and our student voice we have decided to launch an environment project next half term. This will be launched in an assembly by the us… the Student Council.
As part of our mission to let the community see Thrybergh at its best. We have been organising our annual Christmas Concert. We have invited local primary schools to join us and the community to visit Santa and see some incredible talent. We really enjoyed seeing the community on Thursday the 18th of December to share in our festive fun!
Last term, we were talking a lot about kindness and respect and we want everyone in school to feel happy and comfortable here. We have been doing lots of things to promote kindness this term.
So far this year, we have done acts of kindness around the school. One example being our kindness cards. Students had the opportunity to send a kind message to someone that could hopefully put a smile on someone's face, along with acts of kindness being done!
We have also sold kindness candy canes, students can write a kind message and they will be delivered with a candy cane to spread some festive kindness. We have done some assemblies about Anti-Bullying and the power of good!
We also asked Mrs Westmoreland to add a ‘Kindness Award’ to our end of term awards so that we are celebrating kindness as a school.
We are going to keep encouraging kindness!
The Student Council has plans for our school to make it an inclusive welcoming place, this includes events such as culture day to celebrate the cultural diversity of the community and by doing that as a school. We hope to have an impact on the community as we believe all cultural diversities should be celebrated.
Our way of showing this is by opening up our culture day to the whole community and exploring how diversity brings us together. Other plans include taking a look at populated places like the canteen, to give students a place to go and relax. We are looking into the idea of home rooms.
