As part of our commitment to send every child into the world able and qualified to play their full part in the world, our school has an extensive personal development program. The aim of this program is to allow our students to develop as young people, equipped with a series of experiences, skills and characteristics that will allow them to be positive members of an ever changing world. This half-term at Thrybergh Academy, there are lots of opportunities for this to happen!
Throughout each half term, our students are given an extensive offer of PD themes that are delivered by form tutors in the morning. This half term, students will explore:
In addition, we have some extra assemblies taking place this half term with external agencies including:
22nd January- Y9 Students will be receiving an assembly about vaccinations from medical professionals
26th January- Y7 Knives Take Lives Assembly with South Yorkshire Police
27th January Y10 Stalking and Harassment Assembly with South Yorkshire Police
9th February- Y8 Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE) assembly with South Yorkshire Police
This half term there are lots of opportunities for students to work towards their bronze, silver or gold pledges in life skills, active citizenship and cultural experiences.
In addition to the above, there are lots of opportunities for students to work on pledges outside of school for example:
Silver - Research your local area
Gold - Research your family tree or family History
These are excellent opportunities for students to work towards their pledge certificates and to develop those key characteristics and traits.
Alongside our PD curriculum, we have an extensive careers program that is designed to give students the skills and knowledge they need to make informed choices when it comes to post 16 options. This half term there are opportunities for students to learn more about careers:
Careers in the Curriculum - This half term, our Science and Modern Foreign Languages departments will be delivering their careers lessons. An opportunity for students to hear about the career opportunities opened up by different subjects.
Access to Sheffield Programme - Some of our Year 9 students have started their access to Sheffield program this academic year, this half term they will have a chance to visit the university campus and explore university life.
National Apprenticeship Week - This half term, our students will be learning about apprenticeships: what they are, how to access them, what are the benefits and drawbacks of them. We are also keen to share this with.
Y11 Mock Interviews - On Thursday 8th January, we have lots of visitors to our school from various industries. They are with us to perform 1:1 interviews with our year 11 students and provide them with valuable feedback on their conduct. This is an important part of our post 16 preparation.
Y8 Oral Health Program Continues - A group of our year 8 students have become ‘Core Connectors’ for an NHS oral health program to educate and raise awareness about oral hygiene. They continue their work this half term, including delivering an assembly to year 7 students. One of our core connectors, Kian, has written a summary of their work so far:
Last week, 14 students took part in a Oral health care project with many activities such as brushing their breakfast dirt of their teeth using disclosing tablets and colgate 1450 ppm toothpaste which is between the recommended amount. We intend to spread the words about good oral health care and encourage others to keep their teeth in pristine conditions. We believe that dental care is one of the most important things that you should attain. The 14 students have been trained, prepared a project and are now CORE CONNECTORS for our school. This means we are going to be working really hard to raise awareness and talk about oral health and hygiene in our school and community.
There are always opportunities to link to careers, we have a fantastic careers team including a careers coordinator and advisor who are experts and always happy to support students.
This half term, the Wellbeing and Environment committees are the focus of the Student Council. Both committees will be meeting with the trust council this half term to talk about Thrybergh Academy, but also about Wickersley Partnership Trust.
The Student Council have also launched their very own newsletter, which you can read by clicking here.
An important part of personal development is our extra curricular activities. These allow students to pursue their curiosities and passions as well as demonstrating their dedication and commitment. These qualities along with creativity are among the top characteristics admired by employers.
Homework Club - We have a homework club at school three days a week, where students can access chromebooks and receive support when it comes to completing their homework.
👈 Please see attached our full HT3 after school club offer here
Please encourage your child to stay after school and attend one of our clubs, it helps towards their pledges and enhances the school experience. If there are any clubs your child is interested in what we do not currently offer, please contact school and let us know.
This year, our school has started a development journey. We are embarking on a journey to help our school improve and to build a ‘Culture of Kindness and Creativity.’ As part of this program, we are looking into ways to build opportunities for our students to express creativity. Whether that be through the pantomime, music, art or creative writing. Every lesson has the potential to enhance creativity.
If your child has done something creative at home, please tell us about it so that we can praise and celebrate this. We are at the very beginning of this journey and are very excited to see where it takes us!
Each half term, we work with our PSHE specialist to offer further personal development opportunities for our students. Students are asked to complete a survey on our Bounce Together platform. This half term, this was an Anti-Bullying survey. The data from this allows us to identify themes and areas of need throughout the school. Whether this is an individual child or the whole school. We then create a plan, invite students to interventions and take steps to improve our students' experience. This is all about supporting the welfare, wellbeing and development of students in our school.
At the heart of our personal development program is our Thrybergh Way. The Thrybergh Way contains all of the key qualities and characteristics that we believe every Thrybergh student should embody, qualities that will allow them to succeed beyond school. Each half term, are paying particular attention to certain elements of the Thrybergh Way. This half term, we are focusing on:
We are Ambitious - We know that each and every one of our students has endless potential and talent, we want to encourage all of our students to reach for the stars, have the mindset of a champion and know that they have the power to do good in this world
We support others around us - In line with anti-bullying week, we have been speaking with students a lot about choosing kindness. We want to ensure that students are empowered to look out for each other. At Thrybergh, we are one big team and want everyone to feel safe and welcome in our school
We are respectful and listen to others - Since returning in September, we have worked closely with students to talk about respect. This has included assemblies, year group workshops with Mr May and student voice exercises with the Student Council. It costs nothing to be respectful and our students demonstrated this excellently during our annual sponsored walk. The community feedback from the walk emphasised how respectful our young people were and we are incredibly proud of this
We will continue to work with our students and emphasise the importance of using their power for good. Choosing to be kind and respectful- creating a culture of Kindness across our school to make it a positive learning environment for everyone.
We are committed to keeping you updated about the Personal Development opportunities at our school. If you have any questions about our program or have some expertise that you would like to offer our students to support our PD Curriculum then please contact Mrs Westmoreland.
