As part of our commitment to send every child into the world able and qualified to play their full part in the world, our school has an extensive personal development program. The aim of this program is to allow our students to develop as young people, equipped with a series of experiences, skills and characteristics that will allow them to be positive members of an ever changing world. This half-term at Thrybergh Academy, there are lots of opportunities for this to happen!
Throughout each half term, our students are given an extensive offer of PD themes that are delivered by form tutors in the morning. This half term, students will explore:
In addition, we have some extra assemblies taking place this half term with external agencies including:
17th April - Y8 Vaccinations Information Assembly
21st April - Y9 Sharing Information South Yorkshire Police Assembly
27th April - Y9 Your Life Your Choice South Yorkshire Police Assembly
30th April - Y8 HPV Vaccination Information Assembly
This half term there are lots of opportunities for students to work towards their bronze, silver or gold pledges in life skills, active citizenship and cultural experiences.
In addition to the above, there are lots of opportunities for students to work on pledges outside of school for example:
Silver - Research your local area
Gold - Research your family tree or family History
These are excellent opportunities for students to work towards their pledge certificates and to develop those key characteristics and traits.
Alongside our PD curriculum, we have an extensive careers program that is designed to give students the skills and knowledge they need to make informed choices when it comes to post 16 options. This half term there are opportunities for students to learn more about careers:
Careers in the Curriculum - This half term, our Maths and Geography specialists will be sharing with students the skills they gain from studying these subjects and what careers doorways are opened up in these fields!
Friday 22nd May - Y10 Rotherham College Taster Day. Each year, our year 10 students have the opportunity to visit Rotherham College for the day to experience college life. This is always an exciting time for students to experience the post 16 world!
Work Experience - Our year 10 students will be completing their final preparations for work experience in June. Students need to complete their forms and hand them into Mrs Nickson (Careers Coordinator) as soon as possible to secure their places. Support on how to help your child complete the form can be found here.
Parent Careers Engagement - Last half term, we launched a survey to parents to better understand what support parents/carers need when it comes to careers and post 16 pathways for their young people. On Thursday 9th July, we will be hosting for the first time a Parental Careers Conference. We will be inviting our Y9 and 10 students with their parents to talk about careers and have their own careers fair with all the local post 16 providers. While we finalise arrangements, we want to make sure we are offering what parents/carers need. This will be informed by our Post 16 Pathways survey. It is not too late to complete this survey using this link.
There are always opportunities to link to careers, we have a fantastic careers team including a careers coordinator and advisor who are experts and always happy to support students.
This half term is a busy one for our Student Council:
This half term we are working on adding some break time clubs to our extra curricular offer based on the student voice from last half term
Organising National Mental Health Week
Continuing the work on the school environment
Finalising plans for our culture day in July
On the 7th May, we have been invited to visit the Townhall to look at the impact local governments can have on the local area!
Some of us will also be visiting local primary schools during this half term to speak to our future Y7s, and some Y5 students, about what it is like to be a student at Thrybergh Academy.
Keep an eye out for our next student council newsletter!
An important part of personal development is our extra curricular activities. These allow students to pursue their curiosities and passions as well as demonstrating their dedication and commitment. These qualities along with creativity are among the top characteristics admired by employers.
Homework Club - We have a homework club at school three days a week, where students can access chromebooks and receive support when it comes to completing their homework.
Break Time Clubs - We are going to be adding some Break 2 clubs this half term to provide students with more activities to engage with at break time. More details coming soon!
👈 Please see attached our full HT5 after school club offer here
Please encourage your child to stay after school and attend one of our clubs, it helps towards their pledges and enhances the school experience. If there are any clubs your child is interested in what we do not currently offer, please contact school and let us know.
This year, our school has started a development journey. We are embarking on a journey to help our school improve and to build a ‘Culture of Kindness and Creativity.’ As part of this program, we are looking into ways to build opportunities for our students to express creativity. Whether that be through the pantomime, music, art or creative writing. Every lesson has the potential to enhance creativity.
If your child has done something creative at home, please tell us about it so that we can praise and celebrate this. We are at the very beginning of this journey and are very excited to see where it takes us!
As part of our Artsmark program we have recruited some student Arts Ambassadors to help us drive and celebrate creativity in our school! They received their badges at the end of last half term and signed their Arts Ambassador contracts ready to start work this half term. A huge well done to Noah, Danielle, Skye, Mia and Max our new team of Arts Ambassadors!
Each half term, we work with our PSHE specialist to offer further personal development opportunities for our students. Students are asked to complete a survey on our bounce together platform. This half term, students will be asked to complete two surveys during form time:
Me and My Feelings - Mental Health Survey
Substance Misuse Week
This survey data will help us to build our personal development program and put in place support for our students as a whole and on a 1:1 basis.
At the heart of our personal development program is our Thrybergh Way. The Thrybergh Way contains all of the key qualities and characteristics that we believe every Thrybergh student should embody, qualities that will allow them to succeed beyond school. Each half term, are paying particular attention to certain elements of the Thrybergh Way. This half term, our focus is:
WE ARE RESPECTFUL & WE LISTEN TO OTHERS
We will continue to work with our students and emphasise the importance of using their power for good. Choosing to be kind and respectful - creating a culture of kindness across our school to make it a positive learning environment for everyone.
Over the last couple of half terms, a group of our year 8 students have been training as NHS Core Connectors.
The students were trained in oral health and hygiene including brushing their own teeth with disclosing tablets! The students then engaged with four sessions, where they planned and created an activity to share their knowledge with year 7 students at our school.
In the final week of HT4, they had planned and then delivered an assembly to year 7 all about the importance of oral health and hygiene. The students who attended the assembly each received a goodie bag containing a new toothbrush, toothpaste, an information sheet designed by our students and some stickers!
Our Core Connectors had to organise the whole thing themselves and they did a fantastic job! They are going to continue working on promoting oral health and hygiene in our school and community.
We are committed to keeping you updated about the Personal Development opportunities at our school. If you have any questions about our program or have some expertise that you would like to offer our students to support our PD Curriculum then please contact Mrs Westmoreland.
