At Thrybergh Academy, we are unapologetically ambitious for every child. Attendance is not just a number; it is one of the single biggest factors influencing a young person’s future success.
Students who attend school regularly achieve better outcomes at GCSE, have stronger friendships, and develop the habits needed for the world of work. Quite simply, the more a student is in school, the more they learn, the more they achieve, and the more opportunities they create for themselves.
Good attendance is essential to our school community. As with all UK schools, we share our attendance data with the Local Authority for monitoring. Our main goal is to support your child to the best of our ability, while also ensuring our overall attendance rates remain as strong as possible
This means that attendance is not something we can be relaxed about. It is a shared priority and a shared responsibility between school and home.
Every day really does matter.
That’s over a week and a half of school missed. At KS4, that could mean missing the equivalent of multiple GCSE lessons, key exam content, and vital revision time.
We believe in being open and transparent with our community:
Current whole school attendance: 87.5%
This time last year: 82.6%
End of last academic year: 82.4%
Attendance has improved significantly by +4.9 percentage points compared to this time last year – a strong and positive shift
Typically, schools see improvements of around 1–2 percentage points, so this reflects above-average progress
Despite this, our current attendance of 87.5% is still below the national average (around 92%)
We are proud of this improvement, but remain ambitious and will continue working with families to ensure every child is in school every day
As we reach the end of another busy and successful term, we want to take a moment to celebrate one of our most important school priorities: student attendance. We know that consistent attendance is the foundation of academic success, social development, and overall wellbeing. Simply put, every day matters!
To highlight this, we have spent the last term putting a spotlight on great attendance and rewarding the students who show up ready to learn. Here are just a few of the ways we have been celebrating:
FOMO Fridays: We have given away over £100 in Amazon vouchers over the last 2 half terms. Each week we run a raffle and any student present on a Friday has the chance to win a £10 voucher and so far we have had 11 lucky winners.
Weekly Attendance Champions: Every week in Form Time, we have proudly celebrated the form with the highest overall attendance, awarding them a treat to share amongst their group. The winning Form at the end of this school year will be rewarded with “Dominos Pizza” with their Form Tutor.
100% Attendance Certificates and Badges: Students who achieved perfect attendance for each half-term have been awarded special certificates to take home including our newly launched 100 Club Badges.
Reward Points & Positive Praise: Staff have been actively handing out CFPs to students who consistently arrive on time and maintain high attendance levels.
Weekly Treats: We have consistently rewarded students with 100% weekly attendance by distributing treats each week.
Identified Groups: The attendance team has been working closely with a group of children whose attendance sits under the 90% threshold and therefore categorises their attendance as ‘persistently absent’. A number of children have worked very hard and have been very resilient in improving their attendance to above 90% and have received letters and treats for this.
Y11 Crucial Crew: SLT have been monitoring the Y11’s attendance and supporting them with accessing as much learning as possible in order to get the best outcomes in their upcoming GCSEs. A number of Y11s have improved their attendance tremendously and as a result, have received Dominos pizza parties!
Gold/Silver/Bronze Cumulative Reward Events: To finish the term on a high note, all students with attendance above 96% were given special recognition for having outstanding cumulative attendance since September. All these students were given a unique certificate. The students with 100% attendance since September were invited to a Gold Event which involved having a lesson off timetable and using this time to celebrate with their peers which involved a wide range of games and fun activities including music, gaming, and Giant board games as well as snacks and drinks.
100 Club Events: We hosted two 100% Club events for our students each one marked to celebrate and reward students with 100% attendance for either February or March Half terms. The February half term followed a Valentines theme with students receiving doughnuts and milkshakes, and the more recent one was March where students were celebrating with Easter Eggs.
We have already seen a fantastic response from the students, and the buzz around our attendance rewards has been wonderful to witness.
