Hello, everyone!
At Sandhill, we are proud to celebrate the diverse strengths and needs of all our children. This newsletter is here to share updates, support, and helpful resources for our SEND families, as well as highlight the inclusive work happening across our school. Together, we continue to build a caring, accessible, and supportive environment where every child can thrive.
Take a look at what we've been getting up to this term, and if you have any questions, please get in touch with our SENDCo Team - Ms Tims or Ms Fenton.

With Me in Mind
Our ongoing relationship with the NHS mental health service With Me in Mind has seen a number of events taking place in school this included inviting parents in for a Self Esteem and Confidence building workshop offering techniques and advice which they can then use to support their children.
A group of children from Year 1 and Year 2 spent a number of weeks working closely with practicioners in an 'anxiety and worries' Flowers group, allowing them to explore their feelings in a safe, secure environment whilst learning techniques and skills to help them manage any worries they have. Our Year 3 children attended a workshop that was based around 'understanding anxiety and worry' whilst Year 3 and 4 had the chance to make Worry Monsters.
These events help as a school to support children and their parents whilst promoting positive mental health within a trusting environment, we are already excited about the events that we have booked with With Me in Mind next year.
Book & Biscuit
Our regular Book and a Bicuit events for Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2, where we invite parents in to read with their children, have continued to prove popular allowing the relationship between home and school to further develop.
The heatwave couldn't put a stop to the most recent one as we transferred to the air conditioned hall. We look forward to these continuing next academic year.
Drama
At the end of June there were incredible performances of 'Hoodwinked' the swash buckling Robin Hood musical by our Y3, Y4 and Y5 children. All of the children put in so much effort to the rehearsals, learning their lines and the songs so that the event was smooth sailing.
Every child was encouraged to be part of the performance whether it be a choir member or a lead acting part, we believe that all of our children should be given these opportunities to shine, which they truly did!
Sports
We are incredibly proud of our Y5/ Y6 girls Cricket Team who won their Cricket tournament winning a fantastic 3 out of 4 matches resulting in them being invited to the finals were they played brilliantly again. These girls have showed true commitment practising break and lunctimes for months in order to represent the school to the high standard they did. Congratulations to you all on an amazing achievement.
Our Year 4 children attended the Skipping Festival where their weeks of hardwork and practice paid off as they achieved an abdunace of certificates for the differnt skills that they were able to demonstrate. This was a truly inclusive event with all of our children able to demonstrate their new skills, which we hope that they continue sharing with us on the playground.
Mr Snaith (PE Lead) devised the school Sports Day featuring traditional races and sports as well as inclusive games such as 'seated basketball throw' included in the line up. This allowed every child to be included, having the opportunity to compete with their peers in a suppotive but competitive environment where the pupils truly supported one another and put on a fantastice event for themselves and their parents/ carers.
Trips
This term our Foundation Stage have experienced some of their first school trips. FS2 had a visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park where despite the very wet weather they were able to discover exciting animals including watching the lions eating their breakfast (although they all agreed they wouldn't want to eat a big bone for their breakfast!), a very close encounter with a giraffe and the polar bears enjoying a swim. The children represented the school fantastically, showing true resilience in the rain and learning new facts about animals.
More recently FS1 went on a visit to Wentworth Farm and their parents/ carers were invited too allowing our youngest children to experience their first trip with the comfort of their grown ups attending too so all children could attend without worries. A lovely day meeting the farm animals and playing in the park was had by all.
Residential
In June our Year 6 students were buzzing with excitment for their residential trip, they were able to experience new activities such as canoeing alongside the thrill of the 'duck hunt'. The pupils had a fantasic time, falling incredibly lucky to have amazing weather for their overnight camping trip.... although reports suggest there wasn't much sleep!
Transition
As part of our transisition to secondary this year a group of our Y6 SEND children have been working with Aspire for a number of weeks to explore their feelings about the transition, answer any questions they might have and aim to reduce their worries. The key worker will then work with them at their secondary school giving them a familiar face after their transition. We also arrnaged tailored visits to Rawmarsh Comprehensive School for pupils and thier parents who would need extra suppot to manage the change from Primary to Secondary allowing them to meet key staff whilst having extra visits so their new school becomes familiar. This gives all children the opportunity to truly thrive in their new setting.
The whole of Year 6 took part in a transition workshop held by With Me in Mind which allowed all pupils to have the opportunity to talk about how they were feeling about the big change coming up in their future. Although we will miss them all we wish them the best for their future and know that they will go on to bigger and better things achieving their full potential.
For the children who find change difficult when transitioning within school we have laid on extra visits to their new classrooms and lots of opportunities to meet their new teachers and support staff in informal ways so that they have less worries about the move in September allowing them all a successful transition.
Interventions
After school boosters have continued this term allowing a targtted group of students to have extra support in order to reach their full potential in their SATs and Phonics screening; whilst the Year 4s also benefitted from a voluntary lunchtime Times Table club in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check.
