A High Angle (HA) is where the camera is placed higher than the subject being filmed. This means the camera is looking down at the subject, making it look smaller, weaker, intimidated, inferior, vulnerable, or in some way diminished.
The Mid Angle (MA) is where the camera is positioned looking straight at the subject. This is also called a neutral angle because it doesn't really communicate any power given or taken. This is a tricky thing to write about because it communicates normality rather than difference.
A Low Angle (LA) is when the camera is positioned below the subject. This means that it is looking up at the subjects, and makes them seem larger, intimidating, powerful, stronger, scary, or in some way dominant.
Normally, camera angles are used in a subtle manner (ie, only slight angles), so be on the look out for their use. The more subtle the angle, the more subtle the meaning. I think of camera angles of giving or taking away power, but they can communicate any number of things - Authority, respect, anger, sadness, fear, danger etc. Often, they are just used because one character is sitting, and one is standing - this is common sense when showing their interactions, but also ask the question "Who has power here?", because it can reinforce the relationship between two characters. By understanding the events of a scene and what the audience is meant to understand, you will find camera techniques that reinforce these understandings.
