Welcome to Vocal Music!
The National Core Arts Standards for music are educational guidelines that help teachers across the United States provide comprehensive music education to students from kindergarten through high school. These standards were developed by music educators, arts organizations, and education experts to ensure that all students have access to high-quality music learning experiences.
The music standards are built around four main artistic processes that guide how students learn and grow as musicians:
Creating involves students composing, arranging, and improvising their own music. Students learn to express their ideas through sound, whether they're writing a simple melody, creating a rhythm pattern, or improvising a melody. This process helps develop creativity, problem-solving skills, and personal expression.
Performing encompasses singing, playing instruments, and presenting music to others. Students develop technical skills on voice or instruments while learning to interpret and communicate musical ideas effectively. This includes everything from elementary school children singing songs together in class or in the choir.
Responding teaches students to listen thoughtfully to music, analyze what they hear, and evaluate musical performances and compositions. Students learn to describe music using proper terminology, understand different musical styles and cultures, and develop critical thinking skills about musical experiences.
Connecting helps students understand how music relates to their lives, other subjects, and the broader world. This might include exploring how music reflects different cultures and historical periods, connecting musical concepts to math or science, or understanding music's role in community celebrations and traditions.
