How do you assist children with selecting appropriate books while still respecting their freedom to choose what they read?

All students are taught how to select a "just right" book at the beginning of the school year.  This lesson is reinforced throughout the year as they are assisted in finding at least one book to check out that is an appropriate book for them to read independently.  Students may also check out books that are interesting to them.
