Why We Teach Computer Science
We believe computer science is a foundational skill possessing the power to promote collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and student education. CS Education is a topic that is larger than a single technological skill; it is an equalizer that provides student voice and agency. Consequently, we view CS as essential for all students and equity is a vital component of our vision.
This pathway emphasizes the process of computing, guiding students to become confident problem-solvers, ethical digital citizens, and creative innovators.
Algorithms are Everywhere: We explore how patterns and precise sequences of steps (algorithms) are fundamental to both computer programs and daily life, starting in Kindergarten.
Programming is a Team Effort: From brainstorming in Grade 5 to complex design in High School, we focus on the development process and the collaborative nature of building something new and useful.
Persistence & Creativity: We cultivate essential dispositions, encouraging students to keep working toward their goal despite obstacles and to use their abilities to build something innovative.
Computers Interact with Our World: We teach students how computers function (Input, Process, Output, Storage = IPOS) and the critical importance of topics like emerging technologies and privacy, appropriate use, and data ethics across all grade levels.
