Welcome to the Bristow Middle School Jazz Band, also known as the Bristow Big Band, where rhythm, creativity, and fun come together! For over 20 years, our talented musicians have been swinging to the beat of jazz, exploring everything from classic standards to modern hits. As the highest-level band group at Bristow, students must audition to be part of this dynamic ensemble, which focuses on teamwork and musical growth. The Bristow Big Band brings energy and excitement to every performance.
We’re proud to perform at a variety of exciting venues and events, including Jazz for a Cause, the Hall High School production of Pops N Jazz, and our Spring All-Bands Concert. Our talented musicians also go on tour, performing for elementary schools around the West Hartford district, including Charter Oak, Braeburn, Duffy, Wolcott, Bugbee, and Aiken. Additionally, we participate in Celebrate West Hartford, sharing our love for music with the community. Join us as we groove to the beat, celebrate our rich history, and make unforgettable music!

Practice Regularly: Consistent practice is key. Aim to practice every day to improve your technique and familiarity with the music.
Use a Metronome: Practicing with a metronome will help you stay on tempo and improve your rhythmic accuracy.
Focus on Technique: Pay attention to your playing technique. Proper fingerings, breath control, and articulation will make a big difference in your performance.
Practice with a Recording: If possible, practice along with a recording of the audition music. This will help you get a feel for how your part fits into the overall arrangement.
Stay Calm and Confident: Auditions can be nerve-wracking, but remember that everyone is there to support you. Take a deep breath, stay focused, and perform to the best of your ability.
Seek Feedback: If you have a teacher or mentor available, ask for feedback on your playing to identify areas for improvement.
Be Prepared to Play Alone: While auditions are often in groups, make sure you're also ready to perform your part independently.
9. *** Find a Private Lesson Teacher : While practice exercises are important, nothing can replace the personalized guidance of a professional private teacher. A teacher can break down and explain the music in a way that makes sense to you, helping you improve at a faster pace with focused, one-on-one attention. Good luck with your audition, and I look forward to hearing you play!
