The designated skills to be covered in that unit are highlighted on the front page of the planning unit. Before teaching, teachers need to map where they are going to teach these skills within that sequence and when will they be revisited to check learning is secure. Pupils need to be taught how to select the most appropriate enquiry to answer a question with increasing independence as they move throughout the school.
Coverage of working scientifically
IPROF tasks have been selected and mapped out to ensure basic covrage is clear for the year. This is the minimum requirement for working scientifically however staff are encouraged to select further working scientifically tasks. This is a workable document and staff are encouraged to edit if they find a more appropriate task as long as coverage is there.
Assessing working scientifically
In order to assess wether children are working scientifically we use TAPS assessments. TAPS is a database of plans that focus on the assessment of enquiry skills (working scientifically) and focused assessment examples of children’s learning. Lesson plans are clear and structured. This focussed assessment gives an example of how children working scientifically would demonstrate the skill.
