At Whitefield we like to keep mentally and physically fit!! We want our children to love physical education and sport. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up inspired to be personal trainers, nutritionists, sports journalists or gold medal winners.
At Whitefield Primary School, we aim to ensure that every child has the opportunity to access at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, while covering all aspects of the PE national curriculum. We believe, through experiences and a broad balanced and progressive curriculum tailored to all children, they will continue to have the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for their engagement in physical activity, sport and PE.
Our intention is to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and PE for every child at Whitefield. We help all children to make rapid progress in their physical, social and mental development . This helps them maintain a positive physical and mental outlook for the future.
“Intelligence and skills can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.— John F. Kennedy
At Whitefield primary school we use the physical education scheme of work from GetSet4PE. This scheme is inclusive, progressive and emphasis is placed on a whole child approach where every child can achieve and develop. Our specialised sports coach and the structure of the scheme promotes knowledge and competency in motor competence, rules, strategies and tactics and healthy participation. GetSet4PE allows flexibility when curriculum mapping, allowing us as professionals to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the children at Whitefield
The scheme is organised into progressive blocks that allows core declarative and procedural knowledge to be build upon in complexity. Curriculum coherence allows knowledge, skills and vocabulary to be introduced and revisited in each block that increases as they are revisited and develops a clear skill progression as the children move through the school. The scheme is very detailed and is user friendly, it can be picked up by an experienced or novice teacher due to its clear structure and detail
The scheme has been chosen as the 'whole child approach' enables them to develop their social, emotional thinking (SAT) skills. Lessons develop physical and mental capabilities that allow children to self reflect, motivate and challenge themselves.
We teach lessons so that children:
Have the opportunity to participate in P.E. at their own level of development
Have fun and experience success in a variety of sports
Secure and build on a range of knowledge
Develop good sporting attitudes
Understand basic rules
Learn in a safe environment
Have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.
Our schemes of work from GetSet4Pe allows our specialist PE teacher to adapt and change lesson to suit the needs of our child whilst having the structure to be picked up by a non PE specialist teacher to follow with enough detail and support to deliver a good lesson
EARLY YEARS
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and carefully planned provision are designed to support children’s physical development. We offer daily playful opportunities for children to engage in physical activity both in and outdoors. Our children have access to free flow play for sustained periods of time and are encouraged to use our large outdoor environment including our urban forest, mud kitchen, water wall and large sandpit. We access this environment all year round and in all weather conditions to support the development of gross and fine motor control, balance, coordination, confidence and problem solving skills. We explore meditation, yoga, massage and relaxation techniques and share a range of healthy snacks to develop our understanding of the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
PROGRESSION IN SKILLS
Progression documents set out progressions of skills and knowledge in each area
It is important that children use the language associated with Physical Education meaningfully when talking about their work and the work of others.
The technical vocabulary that pupils will be taught and encouraged to use when discussing their own and others’ work is listed by type of physical activity
We aim to provide a high challenge with low threat culture and put no ceiling on any child’s learning, instead providing the right scaffolding for each child for them to achieve.
As well as skills progression in different physical activities our scheme focuses on whole child objectives that are inclusive for all children despite their ability or need. The SET objectives of social, emotion and thinking skills allow the child to develop as a person
The impact of this curriculum design will lead to outstanding progress over time across key stages relative to a child’s individual starting point and their progression of skills.
Children will therefore be expected to leave Whitefield reaching at least age related expectations for PE. Our curriculum will also lead pupils to be active as evidenced in a range of ways, including pupil voice and their work.
Our specialist PE teacher assesses each class formatively on a weekly basis and uses SEESAW as a recording tool to show evidence of a child or group of children that are working at the expected level. This information is then collated at the end of a unit using the schemes assessment criteria and is recorded on the getset4pe website for each individual child
Monitoring of PE is done through termly lessons observations, weekly checks of seesaw content and termly pupil voice questionnaires.
