This unit builds on the improvisation and composition skills that pupils started to acquire in lower Key Stage 2. Using a contemporary classical piece as a reference, pupils will improvise within a given structure using tuned percussion or keyboards and begin to collect motifs (melodic ideas) for their own compositions. Pupils will learn to sing a contemporary song about climate change and explore how composers use carefully selected sounds to evoke a particular mood or atmosphere. Pupils will learn to play a repeating pattern to accompany the song and will develop a class instrumental version of the song. Using ideas collected from their improvisation work, pupils will create their own short composition with two contrasting sections which is a structural device widely used by composers.
