This website has lots of information about the subjects your child is learning about this term.
In Maths this term we cover:
Fractions- where we will be learning about fractions being equal parts. We will look at halves, quarters and thirds of shapes and also amounts. We will also study the equivalence of 1/2 and 2/4 and also use strategies learned to help us find 3/4 of amounts. To support your child at home, use 'half' 'quarter' and 'third' in everyday context such as cutting an apple in half and sharing the two equal parts or giving quarter of the pennies to another family member etc.
Time- By the end of the unit, children will be able to tell the time to 5 minutes. We will first look at o'clock and half past which has been previously taught in Year 1. We then look at quarter to and quarter past. And finally apply our knowledge of the 5 times table to help tell time to 5 minutes focussing on the past and to sides of the clock. To support your child at home you could regularly check analogue clocks and numerous times in the day.
Statistics - We will look closely at collecting and representing data first. through tally charts, block graphs and pictograms. We will also challenge children to interpret data. To support your child at home challenge them to collect their own data possibly of eye colour or hair colour of people in their family or on their street and help them to present their findings using the following website https://www.j2e.com/jit5#chart
Position and direction- we will use language to describe position movement and turns. Children should be able to spot a pattern in movement and turn in a group of shapes. To support your child at home use the following words in context; clockwise, anticlockwise, quarter turn, half turn, full turn.
We will be following Read to Write to help us develop our English. We will read "Rosie Revere Engineer " by Angela Beaty as a stimulus to write an invention narrative. We will be learning how to use noun phrases to describe, use a range of sentences (statement, explanation and question) using coordination (and/but/so) and subordination (when/if/that/because) to join clauses, use the suffixes 'ness' and 'full' and 'less' correctly and also use an apostrophe to show something belongs to someone.
We will be continuing to develop our reading skills through 3 sessions of practice read a week and CUSP reading. During CUSP reading we will practice skills as a whole task and look at different domains of reading such as predictions and summarising. We will be reading "Aseops Fables" and will study the hidden messages with our inference skills.
We will continue to teach Little Wandle Phonics this year for those children who need it.
Children will bring a library book home each week to read for pleasure and Big Cats reading books or their practice reading book on a Friday. Please make sure all books are returned every Monday in bookbags. In addition you can access books on Curriculum Visions to share with your child.
Children begin to understand that sequences of commands have an outcome, and make predictions based on their learning. They use and modify designs to create their own quiz questions in ScratchJr, and realise these designs in ScratchJr using blocks of code. Finally, learners evaluate their work and make improvements to their programming projects.
Children will discuss the changes which happen to us. They will learn that some changes are out of our control and that like plants and other animals, we will grow and change. Children will look at the natural process of growing from young to old and will look at physical differences between the male and female body. The unit will also cover ways to cope in transition into a new class next year. Children will have ample opportunity to share feelings about the change.
How should we care for others in the world and why does this matter ?
Children will learn about significant parables from the bible and significant people who have shown care for others around the world.
Athletics
Children will be able to compete in a team in various running races and working together to improve team performance.
