High School Game Development Intern at KSU's Virtual Realities Lab
The Realities Lab at KSU is a space for students to work with the latest virtual reality (VR) technology. The lab space is used to experiment and create programs for any space and platform. My mentor, Dr. Joy Li: is the assistant professor of computer game design and development and the head of the lab, and she focuses her research on the emotional impacts of VR technology.
Internship Description and Duties
I used various computer programs in the lab and Oculus VR devices to create the final level of the virtual reality depression training game "Schwer." I spent time working on game-level design, creating the background of the game, and learning how to use Unity and its VR applications. I worked remotely for about half of my time there, and I had weekly checkups with Dr. Li to make sure my game level was working.
Empathy Training: A Virtual Reality Game for Depression Prevention
I created the “Reconstruction” level plan and environment of the "Schwer" VR Game. I used the Unity Game Engine to create the game garden background and designed the game plan. The game-plan consists of 2 tasks:
Gathering wood in the garden and building a hut
Learning how to "Ask for Help” from an NPC
Afterward, I interviewed 8 participants on the 2021 version of "Schwer" for feedback and I asked them questions pertaining to how their emotions of users were affected and immersed in the game.
