Fourth Grade Had a Terrific (virtual!) Battle of the Books... Here's a recap from our librarian, Ms. Strachan!

On Thursday, May 28th, the fourth grade Wheeler/Hamilton students participated in our 31st annual Battle of the Books. Many of you know that this reading incentive program is designed to get kids to read widely and get them excited about reading. It is one of the highlights of the spring for the fourth grade. The kids read from a list of 30 books chosen by the librarians at Gordon, Lincoln, St. Michaels and Wheeler/Hamilton. At the Battle, they answer quiz-show style questions about the books in front of an audience of families and teachers. Once we moved to online learning, we knew we had to find a way to keep the tradition alive, but in a different format.

The team of librarians made some changes to make the event successful. We gave the kids an extra month to prepare and created excitement for the event by asking the students to suggest team names. The librarians picked the team names out of a hat and announced them via video conference before the event. We also created some activities to build excitement for the Battle. We held a dress like your favorite Battle Character day and had the kids create posters to hype up the event.

On the day of the event, every school gave each of its four teams the same list of 30 questions. The kids worked in groups online to come up with the answers. When they finished those questions each team got to choose their bonus question, a tricky two-part question. Finally, the teams viewed a video of an object that represented a book. That question was worth a whopping 20 points.

The librarians tallied the scores from all four schools to determine a winner. The Battle Peeps won the event with 217 points. The Perilous Perusers were a close second with 213 points. We are so proud of our 4th graders who approached the day enthusiastically and worked together to answer some challenging questions. It made for a fun and memorable Battle of the Books for all!
