What are the expectations of this program?
You are expected to live on campus and participate fully throughout the entire length of the program (July 13th to August 9th). Your attendance in the course, the research experience, and the weekend activities is strictly required.Â
Who will participate in this program?
A total of ten students will participate in this program: Eight incoming first-year Wheaton students and two current Wheaton students, who will serve as peer mentors.
How will I benefit from participating in this program?
The WOSS Summer Program will provide you with an opportunity to make valuable connections at Wheaton. When the first day of classes begins in the fall, you will already know the campus, several students, and several Wheaton faculty and staff, so you will be able to focus on your coursework and any extracurricular activities. Also, if you find yourself needing assistance with navigating college life, you will be comfortable reaching out to any of the faculty and staff you met during the summer. Finally, you will have research experience, a resume, and a LinkedIn profile, which may make it easier for you to get future jobs or summer internships.
What specific research will I be doing?
Research programs vary by year depending on the the faculty members participating as research mentors. For perspective, past research projects have focused on astronomy, environmental science, behavioral neuroscience, cell biology, and molecular parasitology. This year's research projects are detailed in the application. We will attempt to match you to a research project based on your interests, but please note that each project is limited to 2 students. Importantly, all research projects are designed to allow you to develop skills that will be transferable to a wide range of scientific fields and career paths.
What will a typical day look like?
On Mondays through Thursdays, you will attend class from 9:30 am to 12 pm, and you will conduct research from 1 pm to 5 pm. On weekends, you will participate in fun activities and enjoy any additional down time to rest and/or do anything you enjoy doing.
