Integration of School Subjects

Evidence of Integration

To include a “normal” school curriculum within my project I have made sure to continue to pay attention to all necessary parts such as literary arts, science, history, and mathematics.

Literature Arts

I have made sure to learn new vocabulary words when I am writing any creative or informative papers or entries. some examples include the 5 senses described on the Captain Cook Observation page. I was able to use my knowledge on writing while actively learning new skills to apply in my paper in the process of writing the paragraphs. since literature arts is a wide and diverse subject I of course cannot include every curriculum and skills just in one project, but I have been adding bits and pieces from general literature.

Science

Since this project is based on coffee the opportunity for science-based research is minimal. besides that, I have found ways to integrate science into the project nonetheless. I have looked at the biological steps that go into growing coffee. the necessary factors in weather and soil in which the coffee beans are grown. since the basic science curriculum is learning about the way the world works, I have done that with coffee and its environment

Mathematics

I have looked into the industry of the coffee business and I have seen a multitude of financial statements and papers that state the percentages of profit. Although I have not done any of the math, I have learned what math is used such as algebra in determining percentages and other similar subjects. since this is a research-based project I haven't the need for mathematics but it is used whether or not I realize it.

History

I have studied the history of Hawaii and the incident of captain cook. to integrate history in this project I have used my knowledge from history sessions and learned new information to apply on my website.

The basics of history and its value to students are very important, I have made sure to make this one of my goals to study.

Hands-on Involvement

The pandemic has limited my ability to create a normal project for WHEA standard, but I have been able to reach out to coffee shops and gather information. I also have gone to local coffee shops to experience the community. I hope to expand upon this in the future.

My Drive to Work

To keep myself inspired to work on this project I have made sure to do things that I genuinely enjoy. I get so determined when I am writing papers or taking notes on information so I have made this the main way I have learned about the coffee industry. I know that I have more control over my curriculum I can play with what works in my project. I have chosen a paper along with a more creative outlet on the website. using both of these lets me do what I love most in school while keeping me intrigued enough to keep going.

Connection to Real World

The coffee industry is so close to my own home so I experience it almost daily. every morning I drink two cups of Kona lion coffee and enjoy the richness that it inhibits. Another way I'm connected to this project is my ability to live in the current industry and see how it fluctuates daily. The tourists that buy the coffee and keep the industry alive in Kona are noticeable to me because my parents work in the tourism economy. These both go hand in hand so I, therefore, am personally connected to both the coffee itself and the industry.
