EXPECTATIONS
Make smart choices! You chose to be a part of this class, therefore you have decided to work together as a team, sing beautiful music and learn about basic vocal pedagogy. Bring a positive attitude and optimism to class each and every day. I believe that music is a fun and enriching experience, but we have to work diligently to accomplish our goals.
If the student talks excessively to their peers during class, the student will have their seat moved. If the student continues to be disruptive a phone call home will be made.
CELL PHONE POLICY
Students should not be on their cell phone during rehearsal. Chorus is a time to sing, destress from other classes, and have fun with their peers! We love to have fun, but know when it's time to get serious. I treat all students as adults. Students are allowed to step out of the classroom to use their cell phone for any emergency. It is not a time to step out and talk to friends or use social media. I expect that students use their judgment and leave the room only when necessary. If this privilege is abused, the student's cell phone will be brought to the main office and a phone call home will be made. If a student is seen with a cell phone, one warning is given. The second time a phone is seen, there will be a phone call home. Because of this policy, I expect to not see any cell phones during rehearsal.
BATHROOM TRIPS
Students may step out of rehearsal at any time to use the restroom. They do not have to interrupt class to let me know. If bathroom usage for an excessive amount of time becomes a habit, the privilege will be taken away (unless it is an emergency) and a sign out sheet will be placed at the door.
GRADING
Effort & Participation = 60%
All of your choices, both positive and negative, are reflected in your Participation Grade and include the following: punctuality, attentiveness, positive attitude, proper effort, preparedness of materials, cooperation, responsibility and attendance (in class, lessons and concerts)
Vocal Tests = 20% (If applicable)
Vocal Tests: assess tone, intonation, technique, diction and accuracy of notes and pitches. The focus is individual effort and vocal progress, rather than talent.
Score Checks, Written Assignments, Evaluations = 20 %
Score Checks: Score checks will be announced at any given time. Students are responsible for always marking their score, which includes breath marks, circling dynamics, tempo markings, etc. If the teacher asks you to mark something in the score, please do so! This includes having your materials present during class.
Written Assignments: Every student starts at 100% although if they do not hand in the assignment at the assigned due date, a deduction of 5% will be made to their grade for each day late.
Post-Concert Evaluations: will be completed after each performance opportunity. The students will critique their own performance using categories such as musicality, tone production and professionalism.
It is the student’s responsibility to clear and resolve conflicts with the director well ahead of time. In many instances, problems can be resolved and a student’s grade will not be affected.
MATERIALS
You should come to class prepared with a pencil to mark your scores. Score checks will be randomly announced. If you do not have your pencil and music, you are considered unprepared for class and points will be deducted. Think ahead and come prepared!
Water is important! Please stay hydrated and only drink water in class. No other food, gum and beverages are allowed. (We don't want another ant issue!!!)
