Independent Reading

Each 6th grader is required to read independently throughout the school year. Although it may not be written in the agenda each night, it is understood that students will read an average of 20 minutes per night as part of their ELA homework. Students may adjust this time as needed based on outside activities and other assignments.

Books are available from our school library and classroom libraries. Books should be chosen based on interest and reading level and should challenge the student. Therefore, students should be mindful of their individual lexile levels when selecting an appropriate book. Teachers will inform students of these levels during class.

One Independent Reading project will be assigned at the beginning of each quarter. Requirements and deadlines will be discussed when the project is assigned. Projects will be based on the self-selected book for that quarter. Although class time will not generally be used for these projects, students may use extra help sessions to get assistance if needed.
