Evidence and Commentary of Classroom Practices
Artifact 1 is an example of an academic language graphic organizer for the students to the classification of organisms. Starting the activity with "Classification" by the Amoeba Sisters, followed by the students used the organizer to break down three domains and 6 Kingdoms. The students will start the graphic organizer by defining classification, taxonomy, nucleus, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, autotrophs, heterotrophs, unicellular, and multicellular. This assignment will reintroduce autotrophs and heterotrophs. This assignment is designed to bridge the students' former knowledge from semester 1 unit 4. This artifact will build my students' understanding of how to organize at each level and why the groups are broken down that way.
One way I would modify this classification graphic organizer would be to have the student create a flip back instead. The reason I would think about changing or adding a flipbook would be for students to be able to record more information. In this graphic organizer, students will have to use very few words to fit their ideas.
The artifact provided an example of differentiation in my classroom by showing how I use differentiation in assessing my students. I use the content-based article below level, on level, and above level that my students answer below level, on level, and above level questions. This was a great asset to my test due to make I could see learning gaps and testing ability gaps according to their essay questions. I had many students fail the test but were able to read the article and explain the same concepts. Using the different levels of reading is necessary so my student have can focus on showing their knowledge versus struggling to read and understand the article and questions.
My student excelled at this type of assessment, they were fussy about completing it but they show me they understand the information. In the future this type of assignment I would place either as a solo assignment or along with a lab. Adding this type of assessment on the end of a test was a struggle for most of my students to complete. It turned into two days of testing instead of one.
Artifact 3: Use of Technology
The unit 3 review game had a positive effect on my students, that were getting ready for their test. The students were assigned a player 1, 2, 3 in each group. When the question presented on the board each question assigned player 1,2,3 to grab the white board and answer the question. Students could ask their group member for help during the 40 section they had the write their answer on the white board. When i notice several group answered the question incorrectly we reviewed on the stop. If we did not review on the stop each student was supplied a sticky notes to record questions or notes. At the end of the game I asked all student to review the question they wrote down. This was a great and engaging review game that gave every student a chance to answer question and ask questions.
One way I would modify this artifact if I could would to have every student answering the questions on clickers, which would give me direct data as we moved through the activity. My school does not have clickers. I feel that this would improve the each students engagement while make sure every student answers each question. The students would still be on teams were I would add their point together at the end.
Artifact 4:
Communication with Families
My letter to parents had a great effect on opening up the communication between me and my students' parents. I had many parents thank me for the update letter. I wanted my first connection with my student's parents to be positive instead of complaining about their student. This letter was meant to give parents every resource they needed to ensure their students would succeed in my classroom.
In the future I want to figure out a better and faster form of communication with my student's parents, this would be some type of communication app. I use remind to get information to my students but I want to be able to text the parents without using my personal number. Some parents I do not have emails for and some parents input their emails incorrectly. There are also the parents that never answer their emails, so I feel a text service would improve my communication with parents.
