Purpose
The purpose of this video is to walk through the rules of my classroom for my students. I have four rules posted on my classroom wall and I wanted to give them visual and audio explanation of the rules to make it very clear on my expectations in the class. This is important for my students to see and hear how I want them to behave in class.
Audience
The target audience for this video is my current 11th grade students and their parents. A new school year has begun and this video will be great to show the students who are currently in attendance and for students that may be in quarantine due to COVID-19 my expectations on behavior. Since it will be posted on my website students and parents can access it at any time.
Process and Conceptual Framework
The creation of my video took several steps. First, I created a storyboard. I wanted one frame for each rule that I planned to discuss. I decided to use a website to help me design each frame. I used Storyboard That. I found this website to be easy to use and free. The website provides two free storyboards a week which is very convenient. It also allowed me to decide how many frames I needed to use for my project, I used five frames. I was able to search for a scene, images, and shapes that I wanted to incorporate and could even add text to help tell my story. Using this resource helped me to put my ideas in the order I wanted to present, it allowed me organize my thoughts and choose the best images to enhance my ideas. Furthermore, it guided in the creation of a script to go with the images.
Once the images were created, I copied them into Google Slides, one image per slide. I took some time to arrange the slides to be visually appealing. I used Google Slides because I am familiar with this program as I use it in my classroom with my students. It also works well when paired with Loom. Loom is an online screen recorder. You can either create an account at Loom.com or use the Google extension. I prefer to use the extension. To get started I clicked on the extension button which then asked me to log in with my Google account. When Loom opens it gives you several options on how to present your work. I chose to present both my screen and camera. By choosing this option it put a picture of me in the bottom left hand portion of the screen. I thought this was a valid option so my students could see me as I went through the class rules. I chose to present my current tab, this made it easier for me to make sure I was showing the information I wanted my audience to see. I then double checked that I had the correct audio and video options picked for my computer. At this point I was ready to make my recording. I clicked on the red start recording button. Once I was done going through the presentation, I clicked on the green check mark located on the bottom left of the screen. Loom will then process the video and open it up at their website. From here you can trim your video to cut off the beginning and ends, if needed. I gave my video a meaningful name. Usually, I just copy the link and share with my students through Google Classroom. To satisfy the requirement of this assignment I chose to upload it to YouTube. I open up YouTube in a new tab. I then click on the camera icon at the top left of the screen. This took me to my YouTube studio. From there I clicked on the blue upload videos button in the middle of my screen. I had already downloaded my loom video so I chose that from my download file. I filled in the details page about my video, I made sure it had a name, a thumbnail picture, and set it so it was available for students to view. I then published it as a public video so it could easily be found and viewed. I made sure to save the link to add to my website.
Rationale of Software
As previously mentioned, Storyboard That is easy to use and free. It has hundreds of options to help you create a story for any type of project. Loom is a great screen recorder. When the pandemic first hit in 2020, Loom upgraded all educator accounts to their premium platform and informed teacher users that this upgrade would continue forever. Loom gives the user the option to include just the screen or both the screen and the presenter. This option is great for students to help see the animation that the teacher can give to their work. I will continue to use both of these websites.
