Assessing Mission-Critical Work

In a recent interview with members of the Equity Action Makers Action Stream, Assistant Provost for Academic Effectiveness Dr. Franz Reneau discussed his involvement with the Historically Black Colleges and Universities – Collaborative for Excellence in Educational Quality Assurance (HBCU-CEEQA) group and his work at Georgia Tech. He emphasizes presenting assessment as both “mission-critical” and “cultural” to leadership and administration. After all, who wouldn’t want to discuss using data to drive strategic priorities and fulfill the institution’s mission?

Dr. Reneau’s approach involves storytelling through data. By forming strategic partnerships within and beyond their institutions, HBCU-CEEQA members (representing approximately half of all HBCUs) create a richer institutional narrative—one that transcends mere compliance. For successful programs, Dr. Reneau encourages “planting seeds” to foster cross-pollinating conversations about the overall student experience. Even with existing achievements, addressing achievement gaps remains essential.

The HBCU-CEEQA annual convening will happen in Atlanta 7/10-7/11/24 and is free to attend. Register here!
