(1.) Scramble the letters in a word and ask your child to figure out which word it is and put the letters in the correct order. Ask your child to read the word. Repeat for other words.
(2.) Child finds as many sight words as s/he can in a newspaper article, children’s magazine, or book (food containers are also a great real life resource) and circles them. Child reads all of the words.
(3.) Play “I Spy...” a sight word in the car (using road signs), in a book, in the store, etc.
(4.) Make flash cards of the sight words
child places them in ABC order and reads through the list (top to bottom, bottom to top, etc)
play sight word memory (takes 2 sets of cards)
play sight word ‘Go Fish’ (takes 3 sets of cards)
play sight word BINGO or sight word Tic Tac Toe
(5.) Word sorts: Child sorts the sight word flashcards different ways, (following your direction or chooses own way) explains how they are sorted and reads the words in each group:
sort by beginning letter/sound sort by # of letters
sort by ending letter/sound sort by # of syllables
sort by rhyming and non-rhyming words sort by vowel sound
(6.) Give clues about a particular sight word and have your child determine which word you are describing
